I wanted to make a comment about all of this loss of items in SL. Second Life, maintains that they cannot replace items lost due to server problems, and allege that it is similar to natural disasters such as losing RL things to floods or earthquakes. Now really, where do they have a natural disaster on a monthly (sometimes weekly) basis? I liken it to living in an inner city where the city managers mug their citizens on a frequent and regular basis. While I realize this is a fantastic way to stimulate economy, as the lost items must be replaced, it is but a short term solution. After enough REAL money is lost, people will go wandering off to another SL type website.....SL needs to realize that it is NO LONGER unique. As a matter of fact, it is disenchanted ex-SL members who are building the competition into real threats to SL...... Perhaps it is a lost dream, akin to wishing for honest politicians, but perhaps SL will wake up and start doing something about the problem. After all, this is their livlihood. We don't need super fantastic viewers....voice chat....being forced to upgrade our equipment.....we need to be compensated for the loss due to the Lindens programmers incompetence. Oh well, even I have been exploring in other "realistic chat groups" and I have a few places that I can go as a customer.....the lindens need to realize that as a customer I have a LOT of places to go....but as owners, they have only one....... Comments?

There really isn't anything else like SL out there yet....and they have enough customers at this point that the issue isn't going to just suddenly go away beause they decided to finally fix it. We're talking about non-tangable things that are stored in a computers memory bank.....um.....seriously, none of it's real.....yeah, content creators work hard to make stuff to make our SL experience better and better with their cool builds, amazing skins and clothes and so on......but...it's still all just an image on a screen. We can't take it with us. Computers are wonderful, but unstable beasts. Personally I think it's pretty flippen amazing that their system handles what it does.....across the entire globe. I have lost things here and there..... but ya know.....I smoke too....and lets face...I'm ultimately paying for cancer. I'd say that's way more troublesom in the grand scheme of things then losing content in SL. My point, it's still my choice to buy cigarettes and smoke.....as it is my choice to dump $$$ into SL for my own entertainment. At least SL isn't gonna kill me....and in many cases it has enriched my life.
The other truth here is that only a very small portion of the SL community comes here to these forums....and at that, only a certain % of those folks, complain on a regular bases. So.....over the big picture....LL probably has a much more satisfied customer base then the rants in these forums would suggest.

Ok, So whose gonna be the first to set up a SL Insurance company ? In RL (although not cheap) you can get insurance to cover the cost of items lost due to acts of God (or whichever Deity you choose to worship)

.....ahhh, yes....ranting. No, I was not ranting, I was commenting. When I rant, it is about the apathetic people who refuse to envision, much less do, anything to make things better. And smoking "price" has more to do with genetics, than with smoking itself. Hell, city air causes cancer. I wish you a nice day....oh, by the way, if I run for office, would you vote for me.....give you a carton of cigarettes......

From: Milla Alexandre We're talking about non-tangable things that are stored in a computers memory bank.....um.....seriously, none of it's real.. Umm... that would make money you gave to a bank just as unreal, most of the time the money you earn and spend doesn't exist as tangible paper or coinage. Then again, you'd be surprised at how they torture your data in banks.

We can't take it with us. But in the very near future we will be able to take many of our purchased 'non-tangibles' with us. Most read aboutthe server bridge IBM built. It is just a matter of time. And I see the OP's point. When LL decided to do a mainland rollback - they deleted over $100 USD of non-copy items from my land and refused to replace the items - or roll the sim back - even when Live Help saw that 300 prims had been removed from the land during the rollback. They do this because they can get away with it. Because they believe, like you, that these are not real items and therefore we just have to deal with it or uninstall SL. LL COULD return our items to us - they just don't want to go through the 'hassel' of sorting through all of the UUIDs. As time goes on enough paying customers will have enough of being rippped off by this service provider for something to give.

Many things lost...

I too have many "empty folders" in my inventory.. this started about a week ago..It has never happened to me before... the folders are there.. but nothing inside.. and then some folders inside other folders are also empty... I have been waiting...but so far, nothing has come back.. I read once that somebody said clear the cache and then log in again.. may work.. may not.. any other suggestions to get my "stuff" back? I am talking about MANY empty folders... not just one or two.. Lots of Lindens spent on this stuff as well...

Take it where? To another bank of computers? It still just a bunch of 1's and 0's..or x's and o's...I get confused talking about computer stuff

I don't think there is any real competitor to SL... SL is still very unique.
Besides I got 17,000 items of "stuff" so not willing to start over... but more important than any of the "stuff" are my friends and they are in SL, so SL continues to be where I'll go... it's not really about "stuff" anymore.
I'm sorry you have been losing stuff. While I have lost stuff, really the first and only time I lost anything of significance was about 1.5 years ago, about $L2000 worth.
If I ever did find that SL killer app, and could convince my good friends to come with me, then yes, anyone here can have my "stuff".

You're the second person who has said LL did a mainland rollback (and in your case lost items). I had items just poof into thin air on my mainland and was told by Live Help that LL NEVER does mainland rollbacks. LL...would you friggin make up your minds?!?! (Sorry about your lost items as well)

my inventory number is up and down daily... sometimes things are there sometimes they arent.
with my creations .. i make sure to make 2 copies with slightly different names and box them on my sim
maybe you can do that with moddables that you bought too.
i find that clearing cache and then going somewhere lag free like an empty sim .. and waiting for things to load completely helps a lot.. if your inventory isnt loading.. type the alphabet .. one at a time till your numbers are up...
i have 36000 odd in my inventory. sometimes i only get 10000 items .. but usually the above brings them back

If not, than SL will still be the only place for people who wish to create things, at least until one of the others allows it as well. There is another grid that recently launched. You can build, buy sims, has a currency and eventually have a proper running economy. It will never match SL for size and nor is its intention....but it will be a happy alternative a little more niche. You can use the SL client to log on and its very much like SL in appearance. It will be a builder's delight as there'si so much content that needs to created (basically building another SL from scratch)......it won't be good for Estate Barons, because SIM's are so cheap as are tiers. It already has it's own forums. Plus the Grid developers will clamp down hard on the things they don't want there i.e Ad farms, bots, gambling, public sex areas etc etc My SL partner and I have recently joined it. I'm not necessarily leaving SL, just creating another option with other opportunities.

Well at least I don't feel so bad. This week has been the "Caper of the missing custom build" for me. A contract I was workingon, finally finished, the customer didn't like it, so I decided to sell it prefab in my shop. Sold copies the 1st day, and of course the boxed version, the backups, and the original build, all gone. In fact I think the past 2-3 days of work I did inworld are all gone. Nuked, deleted, and I won't even bother asking who to talk to, because we all know that recovery is a joke. Live and learn I guess.
And if that wasn't as bad, I had to refund the people back their cash for their purchases. And in my anger and frustration I accidentally paid a total stranger back the cash I thought was going to the real customer. So not only did I lose my custom wage, I lost the build, maybe I do feel like complaining in retrospect. Just to let you know, it could always be worse.
