When applying for a dance job the owner asks me to among other things emote her. I am really confused what "emote her" actually means. Have asked around and keep getting different responses so thought I would try asking here......

That's true, Emos are confused.

Emotes however are basically like stage directions in a script. If I type "/me jumps up and down on the spot." then the chat output will say "Conan Godwin jumps up and down on the spot." Use it for roleplay to describe your actions.

I thought it was using '/me' to indicate an action, thought or something.

Like "/me notices <name> watching her dance and feels a tingle...' etc etc :-)

Interesting. I was teaching someone the ins and outs of this (sorry, probably bad choice of words) a couple of days ago and wasn't certain it was referred to as emoting. Perhaps others will clarify.

EDIT: ah thx Conan. You posted same time as me.

But there are also animations that are referred to as "emotes", usually the ones that animate your face to smile, grimace, laugh etc.

In the context I would have thought it is the "/me wishes he wasn't starting another Monday morning at work" type of emote, but the other usage might be relevant.

I think both things are correct.
The usage of "/me does soemthing" is reffered to as emoting, the use of smileys is also emoting, hence they are also called emoticons.
I don't know how i made it, but in the very beginning of my SL days, i activated nearly everything in my Gestures folder, and i received a lot of gestures, and since then, each time i use ":-)" or another smiley, my face gets animated with a smile or a sad expression. I think this is very close to emote

Maybe the boss wants to see how you would react with a customer using an emote? I'm not sure; have you tried asking the potential employer?

OK... Emote lesson #1

Most of the girls carry emote cards in there inventory. Emote (as I understand it) is short for emotion. They are a list of actions that are used for the customers to get them going. It does not have to start with /me but should have your name in there somewhere so that the customer sees its you and you stand out. Some examples are

/me slides up and down the pole while her sweaty body makes her clothes stick to her.

or you can just say...

JulieAnne moans softly to herself as she gazes into the the eyes of XXXX

(note: I put the XXXX in my cards so that I can add the customers name later)

** basically you cut and paste the text from the cards into your chat box**
**Also remember that good spelling is important when your doing this, so get it right **
** As a tip, don't use them one after the other. Then the customer knows your not typing and using a card. Most like to think your just typing it out, so type some free style stuff in there also**

Anyways.... Not that I do this, I just read a lot about it.

Does the confusion come from so many different ways of expressing our emotions, of being emotive?

From: someone
give expression or emotion to, in a stage or movie role

-

I made a gesture that makes my av smile whenever I use :-) in chat, that is emotive (or an emote).

I use "/me nods" or "/me shrugs" or similar all the time to express my body language.

In fact, "/mentos" became my "emote" for typos when "/me nods" came out "/mendos" one day.

Smilies are icons representing emotions, hence "emoticons". ;-)

Emotes are fun! ;) :)

/me wistfully smiles and wanders off thinking about... "Hey, get out of my head!" :p
