Hi All.
I am a musician from New Zealand, and new to SL. I've seen a few people play concerts here and would like to know what I need in terms of software to do the same. I have an M-audio soundcard and am running Ableton Live softwarre, but I am confused about how the streaming works. Could anyone offer any tips? I would be most grateful!
Thanks heaps, and have a great weekend!
Adrienne
Hi Adrienne. You will need:
A mixer, an outboard stand-alone mixer, preferably digital..something like a Roland VS880 would be great but not required.
You can get the music into your computer two ways:
1. With a USB interface between the mixer and the computer.
2. Digital I/O direct to your soundcard. (The better option of you have a digital I.O stereo input..which is why your mixer needs a digital out.
To stream, the best option is Simplecast. (SAM is only for DJing and NOT for live music)
With the above, you won't need any other recording or mixing software on your computer unless you run your mics directly into the computer...the worst option because you'll need one heckuva sound card with at least TWO STEREO mic inputs and onboard software is primarily for recording not mixing a live performance.
You'll also need a Shoutcast stream and Talent. Good luck with it.
P.S. If you play for free because you love it, I recommend you find some nice sims that will let you change the media and hold concerts there outdoors rather than at "MUSIC MILLS"..my term for VENUES who use musicians for traffic and to make money..and who don't think musicians are "legitimate" businesses that deserve to be paid what they're worth. Play for free if you like, but I would avoid "venues."
So don't help them USE you. Play somewhere neutral at a place where the owner of the sim is not trying to make money OR play only for venues that will pay your price. If you have talent, you DESERVE to be paid every bit as much as a content creator.
