For the first time, the SL installer (for the latest RC) has come up with the language set to Chinese, presumably because I have that Region and Locale setting in the Control Panel set to Chinese.

It's never done that before, I think.

You just select the appropriate language, so it's not a problem, but I hope it's not a trend. A lot of programs don't ask.

Mine has always switched to German as default when doing a new installation, even though I tell it to go with the English. Maybe you were just lucky so far?

Edit: Or maybe Chinese wasn't available as a language choice so far?

Oh man, we get this argument at work every six months or so, with half the foreign developers saying "of course" we should have the install CD default to Locale, and half saying that's we need to offer a language list because they change Locale all the time.

I only speak English and Rubbish, so I just appreciate watching a geek war where I have no dog in the hunt.

At least it still gives an option to change the language on install. It seriously p me off if a program installs in my local language, and requires me to get out the installation program or disc or download some addon to reset it to English. I can read both, that's not the problem, I just hate the continuous switching.

That's a logical explanation.

The ATI Catalyst installers bug me about this matter, and I think the nVidia installer did too. I think nVidia actually installs the software, not just the installer, in the Locale language.

I installed the Chinese version of Firefox in order to demonstrate to the Hipihi company that there was a problem with their forum software. That was a trip. With the Chinese version installed, the post editor worked, like it did for them; with the English version, the post editor did not load, like it did (or did not) for me. I had been told over and over by both the company personnel and users that it was not loading because I was in the United States, too far away. The problem had nothing to do with geography, it was a software bug, and fixable by them.

Sorry, I'm rambling.

Would you mind me forwarding suitably anonymized comments to our dev team the next time this comes up? It probably won't make much difference for you unless you buy rack-mounted SAN RAID arrays, but it might help some poor data center guy in India or China. :)
