Good day fellow Second lifers!
this problem is not of mine, but of a friend who has just tried to install SL so he can play. He would come on here and ask about it himself however, some one thought it was a good idea to not allow people to log into the Site with out running SL et least once....Well...he can't get the game running. so how is he suppose to get help?
Anyways...the issue is as fallows and I’ll quote Him "1st a grey box comes into the middle of the screen saying Detecting Hardware... then it flashes Initializing textures, etc." "2nd a window comes on screen it has the heading of Second Life with the minimize, maximize and close icons visible... this window remains completely black sometimes white( can see the start bar the entire time)" "Then it exits to the Crash logger"
Now I have no idea what his problem is...he has reinstalled Sl 3 times, and done a hole bunch of other Stuff. Anyone have any ideas?

He may need to update some drivers, particularly his video card driver.

So has he actually signed up for an account yet? I've never heard of not being able to log in on the site until you've logged into the viewer.

Yes, he has an account, and should be able to login to second life, But he can't even get that far.....And there's a Rule that you have to Run SL once before you can come to these forums....witch in my opinion is a REALLY dumb rule.....

It is things like this which is stunting the growth of SL. For such issues there should be LIVE, immediate, and most of all easy support so that people can resolve such issues.

Have him check the System Requirements to be sure his system will run SL.
Having him log in from your computer is a good suggestion too, least then he can try to get help first hand if that's an issue.

Did he receive and respond to the activation email? That has nothing to do with installing, of course, I just don't understand why he wouldn't be able to log into the site.

Ann, they increased the requirements to get to the forums. You have to at least have payment info on file and you have to have logged on to SL at least once.
Armin, There is another version of the SL viewer called Windlight. One option is to try another version. I know the recent standard viewer one is not being well recieved. Also, he could try the OnRes version. It's the one you get if you do the CSI:NY community. I *think* you can also download it from onrez.com Hope it helps.

Those people make less sense every freakin day. Because it just really sooooooooooooooooo makes sense that I log into SL and bumble around a bit before I'm allowed to come here and read anything.

Ah, OK, I knew the payment info part, but when the OP initially said 'Site,' I thought he meant the regular SL site. *kitteh was confuzzled* Armin, are you Basic or Premium? If Premium, you might be able to get someone on Live Chat who can make suggestions for your friend. It's buried in the Solution Finder in the Support Portal, which means you'll have to go through several steps to get to it.

And, if it only takes one login - I would think that wouldn't really stop any griefer. In my mind the 'require payment info' would do that job of stopping griefers far better, so I still just don't see the need for the added requirement........ but then, I don't really understand LL's stance on a variety of things, so whatever.

From the sounds of the description, it's crashing at the login screen?
Check the firewall and make sure it's allowing SL. Might crash if it's not getting the stupid blog info and the pretty splash screen.. I had it happen after installing it on my hubby's comp, until I told the firewall to allow it.
Edit: And yes, it's bleeding stupid that you have to have payment info on file and login at least once in order to post... it's also freaking stupid to have the tutorials in an area you have to log into in order to SEE them! Linden Labs is not known for extremely intelligent CS choices.
