Hi, I run SL on a desktop and laptop pc. I am trying to get voice chat to work. On the laptop ot works perfect but on my main pc it does not.
When I enable voice chat and go to device settings, in and out are set to default but the volume at under this always says "please wait". When I then go and get a list of active speakers up my laptop's av can report say 5 active talks. My pc's Av (Klaire) who can be standing 0.5m away will resport NO active speakers... and if anyone does speak I cannot hear it on my main pc. I have all volumes up fully and when trying voice chats I make sure streaming music/media is stopped so I can hear clearly.
I can hear all other sounds, music and media - only voice is missing. Oh if I get the av on the laptop to call my pc, it says connecting, wait about 10-15 seconds and disconnects saying I hung up the call - when I never got anything to say anyone was even TRYING to call me.... If I try and call them I get no messages at all - nothing appears or trys to connect...
Does anyone know why may cause it? Both are connected via the same router and dsl cable internet connection so it is not that. They both run AVG Internet Security 8 (full version and updated every hour). The laptop runs Winodws XP where as the main pc has Vista Ultimate (32-bit version), both operating systems are full updated and licenced. I am guessing it is somehing on my main pc that is causing the problems.
I am totaly stumped on this as I cannot see what is stopping sl...
Thank you
Klaire.

On my vista laptop I was having same issue and put in a support ticket and really they tried to help but none of their suggestions were working. The problem was I was using a headset w/mic and my mic is built in the laptop. Once I removed the head set then I was able to use voice. It was a fluke that I found out. I told my sl brother about it and he said get your headset, as I was getting it I was talking to myself out loud and he heard me. Never had a problem since.
But I dislike it because it picks up any background noise in the room. I know how truly frustrating this must be and I hope my suggestion helps. On everything else I can use the headset w/mic, just not on sl.

Klaire, your Vista audio settings are munged up.
When you get everything right, you'll see a white dot hovering over your av's head, and see white dots over other voice-enabled avs. When you key your mic and talk, your dot will emit green "radio waves".
I don't use Vista, so I can't tell you exactly how to do this, but in general...
1. Open your audio controls, and make sure that your headset (or the soundcard your mic's connected to) is set as the default audio input device.
2. Make sure the microphone is enabled and its volume is set correctly in your Windows audio mixer thingie.
In XP, there's a test to make sure you have everything connected up right and the right drivers selected. Probably something similar in Vista.
3. Once you think you have the Windows side of things set up right, open SL and go to Edit/Preferences/Voice Chat. Click the Enable box, and run the Device Setup wizard. Make sure that the device drivers you set in your Windows audio properties are ALSO selected here.
If you did it right, you will see four boxes at the bottom of the device setup window. As you speak into your mic, these boxes will light up green, like an audio level meter.
Click OK and exit the preferences window. Key your microphone and speak. See if the green "radio waves" come from your voice dot, or get someone to tell you whether they can hear you.

Lindal - I LOVE YOU!!!! Got it working, it was a problem with the micophone settings that I did not know about.. It was not allow voice as it could tell no micorphone was plugged in, also the microphone needed volume boost activating (not sure if XP has that) to get it to work. I will print this off in case it goes wrong again... Thank you so much!!! Klaire
