I began thinking about slips as I put on a wool skirt (in RL) with a half slip under it. The slip feels so much better on my legs than wool. How do slips or half slips work in SL? I have seen them in various SL stores, and one freebie box I got was supposed to have a half slip in it, but I couldn’t find one. And on the controls there is nothing for a slip. So does nothing go between the skirt and the skin (other than panties). I know that in SL we don’t feel the wool from the skirts rubbing against our legs, however.

I know that there are some language problems talking about clothing between the various English speaking countries, so by slip I mean the women’s undergarment that is in the shape of a skirt or dress and goes under skirts and dresses, for comfort and in case the skirt is not opaque enough.

It isn't needed in SL. A skirt can be made as opaque as needed, and if it's not opaque, it's like that on purpose.

The closest thing I've seen to a slip is a glitch skirt or glitch pants, which serve a different purpose: Matching a flexi skirt's texture so it doesn't look so weird when you move.

I've never seen any, but if there were, they would most likely be worn on the pants layer. That function is pretty much covered by glitch pants right now, which make up for the skirts deficiencies.

Not well, no.

SL only has one "Skirt" layer. So the closest you can do with non-prim clothing is to wear "pantaloons" or "Bloomers" - pants that go under a skirt. For practical reasons, you would not wear a white slip under a colored prim skirt. It will poke through at the worst possible times, because SL clothes don't support collision between the layers. So what you see is "glitch pants", patterned in the same texture as the skirt, and extending town the legs to just above the hem. If that pokes through, it tends not to be noticed.

I have several prim skirts that do go on in several layers, such as a lovely Elizabethan gown that has an underskirt that is visible through a split in the overskirt, and has a chemise that is worn under that (a blouse with non-prim skirt). But for each "layer" of prim stuff, you burn an attachment point, and realistically, only Pelvis and Stomach will work for skirts.

You could try making a prim slip to wear under prim skirts but the likelihood of being able to match the flexi settings of the overskirt is very small, you would not want prims of your slip showing through your skirt when you move! :( It might also be laggier as there would be twice as many prims to render despite your slip prims not being seen much? ;)

With the horrible system skirt layer, it's so high so your hips and legs don't poke through, were there a slip layer, the skirt layer would have to be even higher and wider! Our rears would have to shrink even more just to look normal when wearing system skirts then... (Or I'd need three shapes, one for prim skirts, one for system skirts and a third for skirts with slips, LOL)

otoh, some designers do make their skirts appear to have a lace hem of a slip or petticoat showing underneath, maybe you would be comfier in skirts designed like those? :)

For those that are not cricketing experts, "slips" are the (up to four ) fielders positioned in an arc behind the wicket on the off side.

Pep (Actually, they are the same thing for cricketing experts)

FOTFLMAO!

Thanks for the info everybody.

I was just curious. The fact that (on SL) wool skirts won't make our legs itch is just one of the advantages SL has over RL for women.

You can get the illusion of a slip by using a silk texture on the inside of the prim skirt. You can either think of it as a slip, or a lined skirt.

The top half of a full slip can be done in the shirt or undershirt layers...but full slips are so seldom worn these days. It's a camisole, if it's anything at all. And of course, it means that your top will have to be in the jacket layer, or you go braless.

The closest thing I've seen lately to a slip is a really cute black slip dress with an asymmetrical hem. The darn thing looks like you're wearing your underwear in public. Which is sort of the point, n'est ce pas?
