Stargate Info Please

Stargates look cool - but how do the SL stargates work? Can I just walk in and be teleported? Can I add my own locations for my friends to teleport to?

There are 3 Stargate networks, Alteran, Cleary and OpenGate with the Arcturus gate network still being around as well (but ive never seen any of them).

All of the major 3 networks work in the same principle, they use the world map thing. So, you dial an address, if you are in the Alteran Network you would dial /d nassau shores to get to my gate on the Nassau sim, you would get the event horizon appearing (the blue watery thing) then ya clickon the vent horizon, a map pops up and you press teleport. Ive heard that in a future client release there will be an option to walk into the event horizon of a stargate and be transported, but so far that option doesnt exist.

If you get your own stargate you will have your own "gate address" which will probably be the name of the sim you are on, the Alteran gate network gives you the option of renaming your address to something you want. I dont know about the other 2.

You can aldo add favourite locations into some dial home device systems but as far as it goes a stargate can only connect to another stargate. You cant get to a sim or island via the stargate network if there isnt a stargate on that sim.

Also, the Alteran stargates are free, and you get a choice of 4 different types of high prim (SG1 and Pegasus/Atlantis gates) and low prim (forefunner/tollan) gates, coming to think of it ithink all 3 of the gate networks have free gates.

Currently the ALteran gate network is able to dial into a cleary and opengate StarGate, the other 2 gate networks dont.

Yep I found one in a sim nearby, mucked around dialling and hitting buttons on the console, for 15min, no blue water or help menu so I gave up :/
