I thought I had read that there is a way of getting access to an archive record of the chats you had months (or years) ago? But I can't find any reference using various search terms.
(I am looking for what we said when my partner and I first met, just for sentimental purposes - though I guess the issue arises when there is some dispute about what was said leading to an AR as well. Could be useful to have access to your own records, anyway).

From: ProfessorKindly Kline Could be useful to have access to your own records, anyway. The easiest way to get access to your own record is to keep them in the first place. By default, public chat is logged. I'm not sure what the default for instant messages was, but as far as I remember it has changed to not logging instant messages in 1.21. The logs are kept in c:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\SecondLife\avatar_name Whether there are any central logs stored by LL has never, to my knowledge, been publicly announced, and if they are, it is very unlikely anyone but LL is ever getting to see them, because it'd result in a major dragging through the mud.

Open your preferences, it's if i'm right under the communications menu on the left. you can set it as you wish. even the location where the logs are stored.

If you do want to keep your chat logs, you might want to make it include date and time stamps.
I have years old chat with no date, rather sad really.

Set chat and IM logging in Edit/Preferences/Communication.
If you browse to the chatlog folder, you'll find subfolders for each of your accounts.
Inside those are separate .txt files for each avatar you have had IMs with. There is also a massive file of local chat called chat.txt.
I find that if it gets more than about three months long, it becomes hard for WordPad or NotePad to handle...so I cut and paste blocks of earlier chat and save them to new .txt file names.
