...but I still need your help. I went to the "Dollar" Store and picked up some sunglasses and a ball cap that fit my personality. But I don't know how to wear them. I drag and drop and it looks like I am wearing the sign.

Again, please pardon the stupid question, but how do I cipher how to apply certain attributes when purchased. What is the rule of thumb?

Thanks,

Darius

Welcome to SecondLife Darius
go to the item in question and drag it to the ground, right click on it and then click on open, you should have a window with the items listed, after that click copy to inventory or wear now.

hope that helps :)

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

You've already got your answer, but welcome from me, too, and don't think of yourself as a retarded noob. We've all worn boxes on our heads. SL is frustrating at first, so it's easy to feel retarded. Hell, I get frustrated now by some things, and I bet the older residents do as well, when they tackle something new.

You're welcome here, and feel free to come visit the hangout in world on the Allana sim. I don't have a landmark handy or I'd put it in this post.

I still wear boxes on my head. Often. If I'm not sure if something is boxed, or if I wanna get something out of a box in a no-build zone... or if I'm just feeling unhappy =P

ANyways yeah... i forgot to say welcome to SL, and I hope you enjoy your stay with us ;)

I'm just saying hi, and at least you had the sense to come and ask. I wondered about wearing boxes on parts I shouldn't have until some kind NCI person took me to their changing rooms and helped me.

You both forgot to say, "Check the name of the box you drag to the ground", after copying to inventory it will create its own file by that name.
Find that file in your inventory and open it, your sunglasses and item should be there, right click and choose wear.

Don't despair, everyone's worn a box at some point. Think of it as a sort of initiation.. and welcome!

I think that would be cute - we'd all get the joke! It could be a box with a picture of a hat on your head, one with a pic of a shirt on your chest etc.

Welcome to SL Darius.

I still do occasionally, even after more than a year in-world...sometimes it isn't clear whether what you've got is a box or the actual item, especially with prim items like jewelry. If you're expecting multiple pieces and you only get one object, though, it's definitely a box.

Welcome Darius, have fun. :)

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I'm such a noob, I have only ever worn boxes on my hand (and still do). I feel sad that I missed the good ol' blockhead days.

OPENING A BOXED ITEM:

The quick and dirty way
1. Drag onto build-enabled ground
2. Right click
3. Select Open
4. click "Copy to Inventory"
5. Right click the box and select Delete

The neat and precise way
1. Right click in your inventory and select New Folder
2. Create a folder to put the new thing(s) in, possibly in a subfolder, such as Clothing/Dresses/Formals/RedStraplessGown
3. Steps 1-3 as in the quick and dirty way above
4. Select only the items you want to keep (you may not need the Floating Text script, the store landmark, or the advertising picture. Think of them as stuff that came in the box but that you usually toss out in the trash.
5. Drag the selected items into the folder you made for them in your inventory.
6. Right click the empty box and select Delete.
6a. If the item isn't No Copy, you may decide to keep the boxed version as a spare. Select Take instead of Delete.

Additional tip/warning: You may or may not know that you can store all the components of an avatar or outfit in one folder and change the whole set just by dragging the folder onto your avatar. However, you can't do this with just part of an outfit. I tried to drag a shoe folder on once and my pants came off. Good thing I was home alone and that it was a warm evening.

Does this include skin and shape? Also, does it remove everything you're wearing first and then add the new stuff or does it do it all at once. I'd just like to know if I can do it publically or not. Sometimes if stuff is slow to rez, it can leave you standing there naked for a while. What happens if you have two of one thing in the folder, say two pairs of pants?

There are two options to "wear" the items within a folder (have to expand the folder before right clicking it to get the options to show up).

"Add to outfit"
Will put on the items in the folder while leaving all other items on you. It replaces ONLY items that are in the way of the new items. For example, this is a good quick way to change shoes. Use this option on any folder that contains only part of what you need to wear.

"Replace outfit"
Will remove everything you are wearing (including hair) and put on only the things in the folder. NOT a good way to change shoes! ;) Use "Replace Outfit" only on folders that contain your hair and a complete outfit. (I think shape and skin are ok, but would need to test this to be sure.)

It is REALLY useful when you get Ruthed, accidentally take off more clothing than you intended, wear a different avatar shape, or just want to change in a hurry, to have a folder set up with a "complete avatar" in it. I also include my walk replacer, hugger and flight feather in the folder. When something weird happens (like my shoes appearing in my butt) I just grab the "Malia Avatar" folder and put it on!

I may experiment a bit to see what happens with different scenarios. I think if there are two items of the same piece of clothing it just picks one, probably the first. My halloween punk rat had three different hair/hat options but when I dragged on the folder it just picked the last one I had worn.

With the shoe/pants incident I assumed since I wasn't wearing shoes that it would just add them and replace the socks and shape that were also in there. Nope, it all came off and I was standing there in my shoes and socks.

EDIT:

Thank you!! This will be so helpful next time I'm barefoot!

Might as well add here one of my favorite pieces of advice to newbies:
It's never too soon to start organizing your inventory.

Yes. The way people change into a dragon before your eyes, and then back into a sexy secretary or whatever, is by having everything in a folder and using the "Replace outfit" selection when they right-click on the folder in their inventory.

But remember - in your folder for your usual avatar, have EVERYTHING - bald cap, eyes, shape, skin and basic clothing. Otherwise, when you change back from your rabid unicorn AV, you might look weird.
