Hello All,
Event starts at 12PM SLT
Babbage Linden Has Installed Our region (Sweethearts Region) on The Beta grid (Aditi) to test new software that is due to hopefully be released after the first of the year. What he wants us to do, is put a heavy load on the region to see how the performance compares to the current software we are running on the main grid (Angi). We will be holding a $L5,000 Event to test the software and hopefully put big load on the region to see how it performs. We would like as many people to show up as possible to help test and improve the future of Second Life and region stability. I know a lot of you region owners are tired of the teleport in and out lag. It appears that this may be fixed but doing a load test will be a true test.
We will be paying the event winners on the main grid because the Beta grid money and transactions will not carry over
We invite everyone to help us test the new software and hopefully we can get a better running product in SL to help everyone

This is not a advertisement for my region but a honest and true event that Babbage Linden Has done and helped us(SL) to hopefully get a lot of bugs cleared up :D

For those who need instructions on how to get to the beta grid read below
Sunday, December 13th, 2009 at 12pm SLT for our fabulous Winter Formal Contest on the beta (aditi) grid. Our first prize male and female will win $2,000L each! Our second prize winners will win $500L each. (we must have at least 30 contestants for the prizes to be awarded so bring your friends!) Everyone there will be automatically entered into the contest.

How do I get to this "beta" grid? It's easy! Close out of SL and restart your SL browser. When you go to your Second Life "log-in" screen hit Ctrl + Shift + G, this will bring up different grid choices. Choose "aditi" and log on as normal. To get to the party just use any of your Sweethearts landmarks, or find the Sweethearts region using your map. (After the party, just go back and choose "agni" for the regular grid)

Keep in mind that you can spend all your money there and if anyone does not have any I will give you some to spend to help enter the contest.
New avatars may have a problem getting there because they only do a periodic snapshot of the database.
Avatars 30 days old or older please try your best to attend
Today and 12PM Second Life time! Do not be late and lets help Linden Labs fix the product to give us all a more comfortable experience!

Ok, 'cause, I was gonna say that L$5k on the beta grid is a bit on the silly side.. :)

/me will be there, with scripts on.

This is puzzling. I mean, I can't see what you have to gain, but then again it's a strange request.

After all, I'm sure that if Babbage wants a beta grid test, he can post on the blog about it.

He could even post here, in this thread for instance. *shock*

Or, if he wants a single region stress test, why not send out a request on the SLDev list and have 20 developers crank up a bunch of alts/bots? Presumably you don't need more than 100 AVs, max.

I would think you'd want a controlled test too, one with a certain percentage of scripted hair, boots, etc., not just random AVs.

Puzzling.

Or even drop a test region onto the main grid.. I guarentee we could max that puppy out before Babbage could finish saying "go".

As for Lindens actually using the most popular out-world place in existance to communicate with residents, I don't see it happening. I've been yelling at Management Linden for 6+ months now about this issue in the blog and they won't even acknowledge it. Apparently, having a working product or admitting that it has issues is not that high on the priority list.

/me again wonders where M hangs out in-world so she can TP friends in at regular intervals.

Huh? If everyone is automatically entered, why would we need to spend money?

I'm guessing it is to buy the outfit and accessories that you think will win you the Winter Formal contest.

The only thing to gain is to test the software in which he has asked us to do. We have a really busy region in main grid. If you have any problems with my post then ask him about it. This is not a ploy to advertise.. The only thing we have to gain is to help make a better product for Second Life and testing software is one of the main events to do so..

For those who want to Question if this is real or not here is his note to My Wife and I

[2009/12/08 6:40] Babbage Linden: Thank you for agreeing to help me test the performance of the new version of the simulator that I'm working on. Your region should now be running on aditi with the new software. Please log in to the Beta grid, compare the performance of your region there against the version running on the main grid using the statistics bar and let me know your results. I am particularly interested in comparisons of the simulators under load, so if you could run events or other intensive activities on both versions of your region and compare the performance I would be very grateful. You should be aware that there is a known issue with this version that can cause attached scripts to stop when entering the region and if you are making HTTP requests from your region you should be sure to check the X-SecondLife-Shard header and ignore any requests maked Testing to avoid the beta version of your region affecting your production system. Please let me know if you have any problems. I'm looking forward to seeing your results.

You are more than welcome to verify this with him

Ah, interesting, thanks for posting this. And I see why you post here - whenever I've been to Aditi the place has been deserted. Are you going to ask the same people to come to a parallel event on Agni, so you can compare apples to apples?

Presumably you would want people to buy whatever attachments they normally wear - Mysti, Sirena hair, etc.. .... to test with. But, I guess they should check to see that scripts are still running when they get to your sim!

Good luck and have fun.

/me is a bit disapointed. It would have been better for Babbage to say what he wanted tested. Mostly, it was people standing around or trying to measure stalls with the stats bar, which is pretty much useless in this one particular case since it just measures the last server frame.

Still, it does seem better - people TPing in seemed to only stall it for 1-2 seconds when there were 20 or so there, though I did wait a good 10 seconds near the end for a line of my chat to show up.

edt: arg.. Babbage did say to use the stats bar.. wth?

I was using my scripted performance wand I made that samples dilation up to 10 times a second. The stats bar is not a good measuring tool for time dilation. It seemed that scripted attachments were better behaved, however rezzing a build displayed the same poor performance as on the main grid, especially when issuing an llDie().

I'm not sure what this test was about except to see if rubber-banding was as bad when the sim is under a heavy load with lots of avies. I would like to see a beta grid sim running the same version in a sandbox and do more tests against http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-3895

Problem with the stats bar and what it reports is that it just gives you the last reading. If you're reading 1.0 and the sim locks up for 2 minutes then picks right back up again, you're going to get two 1.0 readings. There's no indication that the sim passed out for a bit. For overall sim performance, sure - it's good (though I prefer sim fps). For svc-3895, I'm very unconvinced that it's useful at all.

Try selecting a location to log in to, such as Ahern.

I'm told there is a bug that requires that in some cases.

Look upon it as the first in a series. It would be great to have more and have a n/c to give out saying what to do and what not to do, and directions to get there. One isn't all that useful, but a few in a row would be good with the same event on Agni to compare.

People might get all fired up.

Yep. I'm just annoyed that I get to test thier stuff on my Sunday afternoon and he couldn't manage to show up for a few minutes.

/me looks at her tier bill.

/me looks around for a Linden.

/me looks at her tier bill again.

I don't get why he said to use the stats bar - I know I've seen sim freezes of 10+ seconds with just a minor twitch in the stats, a bunch of times.

Maybe they'll blog about it.

/me too. I'd even volunteer my agni mainland home as a test region but I don't think they'd go for that.
