I was startled yesterday to have a person introduce me to their alt, an avatar standing right there with us! The alt spoke via local chat to us both.
Was I the victim of a little hoax? Or (short of having two computers in the same room, which I confess to not asking about) is there a way for her to get more than one account up simultaneously?

If your computer can handle the high system requirements you can have multiple accounts online. You need to add "-multiple" (without quotes) to the the Secondlife shortcut's target.

Yep, if your computer is good enough it's possible to have multiple copies of SL open at once. http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/01/10/tip-of-the-week-17-how-to-run-multiple-viewers-at-the-same-time/Also there is AjaxLife, a chat program that interfaces with the virtual world of Second Life through your web browser. So you could have one avatar logged on normally and the other(s) logged on via Ajaxnet. ajaxlife.net http://blog.ajaxlife.net/

I normally use the Nicholaz viewer, but can open the RC at the same time and be logged into both. Handy if I have to transfer stuff between me and my alt, or if I wanna mess with my partners head. Muahahah! Ok, the latter was a joke, and a rather pointless one, as he doesn't even read these forums..
Anyways, I should probably try the method from the link on Nicholaz, since the RC tends to crash way more for me.

I've had four on at once (three and myself..), however there were some pretty wierd texture effects beginning to become evident on arrival of 3 and 4, beyond that I was probably pushing for a crash. It's a lot more effective to use a second computer (assuming you have one of course), however be warned that if you use a pc and a mac things will often to look a little different in each. Perre..

Well, I don't know, let's ask Fred. ) LOL, etc.. lol, it can be pretty fun. I'm lucky enough to be able to run 3 lots of SL at once, so when I get all the me's in one place....well, it gets insane. Of course, it can be tough typing from three people, so usually my alts are mute lol. There's actually some pictures somewhere of my alts attacking the hangout lol. Just make sure that if you are gonna do it, people know they are alts. People can get pretty wierd about it if you dont, though that is with very good reason.
