Unfortunately, I think you answered your own question.

It is likely that you are stuck waiting for textures to load (you'll see gray until they load, individually). It sounds like a pretty extreme issue in your case.

When I encounter an area with alot of grey textures trying to rez, I try a few things:

Spinning around- don't know why, it just works.

Moving my mouse over the grey objects as I think that makes the client focus on that object more, like its saying to the server "HEY! DUMBASS!! Look what he's pointing at!!! Get this NOW!!!"

Going into Preferences & changing the View Distance, up then down, then back up to where it was.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

A couple of things to look at..

SL requires a pretty good broad band connection. If your connection is slow, then you can have that "grey screen" problem in that the textures are very slow to load.
A poor wireless connection will cause this amoung other things..

The other issue can be a firewall, either at you cable/dsl modem/router or on your PC. This may either be blocking the needed ports or throttling your bandwith down.

Press ctrl-shift-1 to bring up the "Statistics Bar" which will show you your ping, bandwith, packet loss, and FPS. This will help you see if you connection is the problem. It will also tell you if your system is really up to the task.

A good set of minimum values would be
FPS > 10 fps
Packet Loss < 5%
Ping Sim < 150 ms
Bandwidth will be very high while textures are loading but should drop down to around 50 kbps after a few minutes.

I hope this helps
