I have viewer 1.23, SL keeps telling me I'm not running the latest viewer, but all I can find to download is 1.23 huh???

Most odd. My inclination would be to move to a safe place any chat/IM logs you want to keep, uninstall SL completely, and then do a clean re-install from the website. Something's clearly corrupted and that's going to be a lot quicker and easier than trying to figure out what's broken.
