Does anyone know where I can find the policy regarding advertising signs in SL? I saw it in the blog and since the blog has changed, I can't find it any longer.
Also, does anyone know if a policy has been written about land cutting yet?
Thanks!

You're right---I'd had it bookmarked. The Ad Farms blog entry was for September 12 of last year, and the page now states 'there are no blog posts for this day'.

Looks like they just updated the blog software. I'm sure there are still some bits to tweak and they've said they're going to keep all the old blog posts. Be patient.

Their redirect thing seems to be all kinds of messed up. I get this warm fuzzy feeling that the forum conversion will be a smashing success
![]() Here are the ad farm notices: https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/features/blog/2008/09/04/second-life-and-ad-farms https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/features/blog/2008/09/13/more-information-on-ad-farms-and-network-advertisers If you know who posted an old blog (perhaps through Google's cache), you can dig up new improved links with an URL like this: https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/features/blog/authors/Jack.Linden ... with a dot instead of a space in the name. |

Whew...glad that was found. I just put in an AR today for someone in my sim with a big red FOR SALE sign floating in the air. (Also has his parcel marked for 97L sqm and a beat up trailer sitting on the parcel, next to a very nice house. Looks like the "extortion" tactic to me.)

Policy as stated by Jack Linden
02-26-2009 01:33
We will allow no more than 50 advertising locations owned by a single individual, whether personally owned or via groups in which you are a member, unless you have written permission from Linden Lab to exceed this limit.Use of Alt accounts/groups to circumvent this restriction will be considered a violation.
In addition to the cap, we will allow no more than 1 advertising placement by an individual in any single region. The advertisements themselves.. Adverts should be grounded to the terrain, not floating. Adverts should extend no higher than 8m from the ground. No rotating, no flashing content and no particles. No unsolicited dispensing of IMs, notecards, landmarks or content. No light sources or glow (full bright is acceptable however). Advertising hoardings should be Phantom. Adverts must be clearly PG in nature. No sound and no temp-on-rez content. Ban lines should be switched off. |

grounded to the terrain

I have a question about the acceptable ads. I have someone who has put up an ad out in the water near my house. It is made like a hand made log raft. My question is the requirment that the ad must be grounded to the terrain. Does this mean that ads are only allowed on land. Can I AR this ad cause it is out in the water.
Thanks for any clarification on this rule. |

Thanks for any clarification on this rule. Unofficial opinion: No. If I were the G Team, I'd laugh at you. What would you have the owner of a water parcel do?? Put the "For Sale" sign on the sea floor? If I were doing it, I'd make a channel marker buoy, not a log raft. It'd stick up higher and be more visible, and still be within the spirit of the rules. _____________________

Thanks for the response. I only wish it was a "For Sale" sign. It is a permanent ad for some RL networking. If it was for sale, I would just buy it and put an end to it. Im still going to AR the ad cause it is spinning and it is right on the sim edge and it spins into the adjacent sim. Thanks again.

Yes, spinning is a no-no, and encroachment is a DEFINITE no-no. The ad for a RL business isn't necessarily a no-no, so long as there are no more than 50 of these things scattered around SL, according to Jack's policy on adfarms. _____________________

Just a piece of advice, more directed towards everyone in general than to you specifically, but NEVER EVER "just buy it to put an end to it", unless the price is in line with other land in the same general area, or overall. This is one of the tactics which used to be used by certain "people" to get unsuspecting residents to pay exorbitantly high prices to "buy" their ad parcels. The problem is that they would take that money, and turn it over, buying more land, cutting it up into more tiny parcels, and put more ads out elsewhere. So, no, never just "buy out" parcels. There are a lot of new rules which have effectively put an end to this odious "business method", and all it takes is an Abuse Report to get it fixed. In your specific case, Abuse Report it. Go out to where the sign is, right-click on it, and then select More.. a time or two until the "Report Abuse..." section appears on the menu. Select the type of report that most relates to the problem, click "include screenshot", and fill in some details about it. Submit it and wait a few days to a week. If nothing has changed after a week, repeat it again. Keep doing so until LL gets to it and fixes it, or tells you to stop. |
