Nyx,

I may be in the minority but I'm not sure what an "alignment hud" is. The HUD part I understand - but what does that HUD do?

For aligning prims?

Prim Docker is a popular one.

I sooo need such a thingie. It's almost impossible to line things up correctly when dealing with oddly sized or placed prims.

ya prim docker is really nice for a lot of things..
just make sure you do the permissions part in the manual so you are listed as the creator of the prims you make..i was gonna see if i could set some of them up with different shapes and just go back from hud to hud..
i believe when you set the permissions you can set up the shape you have on the ground..i haven't tried it yet but it would be nice if it works hehehehe

For such a small amount PD is a beauty. For those odd-sized jobs or for a new builder, it can be handy.

The standard building grid and in-built tools is the most efficient way though.

I agree and i think everyone wanting to get into building should understand how the standard tools work before anything anyways..
it makes it easier to work with any other tools you may use..
the standard tools are faster for me in somethings..
once you have the math for the first lock on a wall it's just pasting anyways but i like lining up the corners of prims on different heights also..it's nice for things like that too..

still i like the standard tools most i think..

Does someone, by chance, know of a good tutorial on the building grid and inbuilt tools?

I have a house that I manage to get a few of the linksets somewhat out of alignment. For things that are the same size, I can figure out how to set the positions, but lining up the odd sized and/or shape things is making me pull out my hair.

I'd second Prim.Docker.

One advantage is that is does speed up the workflow.

Be warned though, do not assume because this is an alignment tool and scripted that it is 100% perfect because it is not.

As with most alignment tools the options are to align prims together using the normal
axis' with 3 alignment options, maximum, centre, minimum, because of the default edit menu only displays 3 digits after the decimal the numbers will always be the same. Prim.Docker is supposedlyaccurate upto 5 digits and the maximum digits in SL is actually 7.

So with the default menu there are 2 digits that you do not see that Prim.Docker is aligning to and there are another 2 that most builders don't even know about.
In my opinion and after 2 years of building in SL these tiny alignment problems are in most cases what causes the flashing seams between 2 prims.

So with prim.docker I would certainly recomend it and as other posters have mentioned, first learn the building tools inworld, in other words learn to walk before you run.

LittleMe,

without seeing your build its dificult to give the correct advice and I am not the best at explaining these things in the forums. In the builders Forums there have been many posts about how to use the grid alignment tools from the edit menu. Try doing a search on the common words from the Edit Menu like World Ruler or take a look in this link at post no:8 for a quick explanation.

I have used both prim docker and skidz prims in the past.Of the 2 I would agree that prim docker is the best.I build fast, when SL allows, and both slow me down now.I think to start they are a good idea but after a while you should not need them.

You can edit a file in the SL app folder which makes those extra digits show in the editor. Can't remember the details and too tired to look.. sorry. Someone else got it?

Amaranthim,

Contact me inworld for details, I wrote a notecard explaining how to edit the edit menu.

I will not publish details here in case some "newby no nothing knows all" edits the wrong files and blames me because SL won't run anymore.

I found this via a web search: http://tentacolor.com/2007/05/14/howto-fight-prim-drift-with-awesomeness/

However, I haven't tried it myself yet.

The info in that link is slightly incorrect, there is no need to edit using "give me plenty plzkthx" it makes it sound like a cheat code for a PC Game and editing is actually very simple if you know what to edit and what to add.

The file path is also incorrect.

Also, what it fails to mention is that there is a bug that depending on where you build on the sim the co-ords will act all funny and when manually editing the co-ords it will cause your prims or linkset to go off world never to be found again. Well, sometimes they reappear in L&F folder but not always.

Thank you - that post is one of the better explanations and walk-thrus that I've read about the ruler. I was always a math wiz except when we got to geometry - I have a terrible time with the visual/spatial crap.
