Skinnable.

It defaults back to the older dark-blue-ish skin, not the windlight/dazzle/onrez light-thin blue.

hmmmm

2 minutes in, no crash yet. :)

Working fine for me, no problems so far, I like the choice of UI, however I don't like having to reboot the application to apply it. I know, nit-picky, but oh well.

Also, I think they should have defaulted it to the silver UI, considering most people by now have been using it for some time, and the change back is awkward to me.. of course, I'm just switching it back to silver, but still.

Anyway yeah.... seems to be working wonderfully :D

One nice thing about the blog post:-

";(Side note for SL historians keeping track: As you know, the multi-month project was code named “Project Dazzle”– but that’s really the name of the architecture juggernaut work that got us to refresh the UI. In the final presentation in 1.20 Viewer, we opted to call the resulting color option by a simpler name, ‘Silver’.)"

There was something disturbingly !!!SHINEY!!! about the name Dazzle.
Opting for something more restrained demonstrates some grasp of clue IMO.

Yep, running great for me too so far.

I would have liked a default to the silver (a much better name than Dazzle) too, but they are never going to make everyone happy with something like that. Either way, I love that we get a choice now.

Can't wait to try this one. The silver Dazzle was really hard for me to read in some cases, but the ability to change the skins? Ooooh!

And don't forget, the larger project of more skins is still in the works! Then we'll be able to choose more than just light or dark! MY GOD MAN! Sounds cool, dunnit?

I just noticed that the RC seems to have lost my custom sky in the WL enviornmental editor>advance sky. Anyone else notice this? Has it always worked this way?

If not, you might want to jot your settings down on a notecard before you install the update.

I just fired it up and it took a few minutes to get all my settings back to how I like them but it is running good so far. One thing I've been playing with for a few minutes that is starting to irk me is the statistics bar. In the regular viewer I could have it open with my mini map over it. I always like to have my fps showing and mini map right under it, partially over it. Now it puts the statistics bar in an actual window with a scroll bar and I can't put my mini map on top of it. The mini map defaults to the back. Am I not doing something right or is this a new "feature"?

My old preset skies are still there. Those presets are stored in the user settings folder which is not the same as where the windlight program installs. Are you uninstalling the old RC first? Or installing to a different directory? I'm really not sure how that is happening.

On a Mac, you hve to manually drag em out of the package

Oops my bad. The presets ARE in your program folder. Mine weren't overwritten though? I just downloaded the new windlight and ran it from my desktop. I do recall seeing it once where my windlight presets were lost on an upgrade so it seems to be all very random.

Nostalgic for (some of) Silver
07-11-2008 04:43
So, surprisingly enough, I kinda miss the Silver skin. Not enough to use it again, but with the "everything old is new again" default look, I see that there were things I liked about Silver.

For one thing, I realize now that the parcel settings icons in the top bar of the window already had all distinguishing features hidden by visual noise even before the Silver skin, so going back to "default" doesn't really make those much better.

And I miss the squarer buttons. The ones in Classic seem kind of clunky now--an unconscious sense that screen real estate is being wasted by all those curved corners, or something.

But I also liked the relatively desaturated colors for unselected UI elements. They were way too bright for usability, of course, but they didn't add as much irrelevant chroma as the blue Classic buttons. Same with many other elements of the UI, that are just Too Blue in classic.

At least to my taste, the UI of a program like this should be only as attention-getting as is necessary to show status and convey the selections available, not to distract from the view--which is that with which one really wants to interact anyway.

So, I'm almost ready to tackle a new skin that is basically a very darkened, very desaturated "Silver."

I never tried any of the other custom skins that were floating around before this new RC. So maybe one of those already did most of what I have in mind?

I can't believe how much I missed the old UI... I've been using the Retro Dazzle patch all this time and tolerated the buttons and icons for the time... Now, yesterday, I get the old UI back and was surprised at how much I really liked to have it back. (O_O)

LL, please keep going in this direction. I now LOVE the 1.20.xx viewer more than ever. It's been the most rock-solid stable experience I've had since 1.20.9. I'm pleased to see AA support. ShowLookAt works again. And, now, I'm over and above happy to see my favorite UI back in place. (^_^)y

While I am nowhere near using a current viewer, it is encouraging to see the updates appear to be moving forward, without braking as much stuff as before. Also it's good to see that the Providers listened to the requests to have an option other than that awful Dazzle skin.
