So last night I was on for a bit, and I was flying my skydiving plane around. I landed at some random place where like 10 or so people were all standing around talking. I stopped and chatted for a few, and then left. I then landed in a sandbox area, no one appeared to be there, so I left there. I then landed at an airport I saw on the map. I took my plane, and tp'ed to one of my fav stores.
I noticed as I was camming around, I had a small, shiny black orb hovering near my bum :-) I clicked on it and selected "Edit". It did not have any info in the created by field or anything, but there was a check box in the "phantom" something or other. It also was a much larger, invisible item that was protruding into my avi. I tried to detach it and to drop it, but it wouldnt detach. I was able to use the arrows in edit to move it out of my avi. It was an invisible object, except for the small black orb. When I clicked "CTRL,ALT, T" I could see this object. It was a ball on top with two rods that went down at 45 degrees. The rods formed a "V" shape with the small end of the v at top connected to the ball. The small black orb appeared to be 1-2ft. behind this and was the only thing visible.
I shut down SL and when I re-launched and logged in it was gone. Does anyone have any clues as to what this was?? No one gave me anything last night, and I didnt buy anything. Could someone have randmonly attached something to my avi?? Could it be something malicious that I should worry about?

There are some following devices out there. Talk about tailgaiting too closely!

Yup, sounds like a parachute to me, particularly given that you were in a skydiving plane!

Your HUD attachments can also move to your bum too. So check if any of your huds are worn and seem to be missing from your main screen.

Parachute attachment?? Is this a part of the chute, or are you talking about the litlle freebie chute is only a small oval orb on your lower back? I have a Terra Pro III, which is the full backpack. I was wearing that earlier, so I hope this wasnt somehow a part of my chute!!
Cristalle, if this was some sort of following device, it could have gotten attached to my avi without my knowing? If so, that sorta freaks me out a bit! Why would someone want to be tracking me?

If you ctrl alt T the chute attachment, you can always see the chute "wires". Sounds like that might be what you were seeing.

I know for a fact this was not the little freebie chute, I just hope it wasnt a part of my backpack chute. It did not look like anything associated with a chute though

You need to check when wearing your chute what is invisible and what is not. It does not sound like anything that is part of the chute to me. You were walking around in a STORE by the time you saw it. So I think it was a following device, and when you logged off, it probably started following someone else, or died.

Thanks Cristalle, I think you may be right. I have been skydiving in SL long enough to know what my chute looks like, and if it were part of my chute, I am sure I would have noticed it before.
So are these types of devices auto-attached with no warning? Or would it have to have been given to me somehow and linked to something that I put on myself? Why would someone put on of these on me in the first place? Could it potentially do anything more than just track where I am ?

Not actually attached, they are scripted to physically follow you around using usually a sensor and a few other commands. If scripted to do so, they can be right up on you, and can seem like they're attached sometimes. And potentially it could spam chat, it could self-replicate..it could be a griefer weapon OTHER than a tracker.

If it weren't attached would I have still had the "Detach" function enabled when I right-clicked it?

ok so it was attached ;)

But things DO have to ask permission to attach themselves =/

Nothing attaches without your permission. It can follow, however, without your permission. You wouldn't get "detach" on the pie chart.

OK, thanks everyone. I will have to check tonight to see if I see it again. This is so weird, lol. I really believe if this were part of my chute, I would have noticed it before. I have worn the same chute and been skydiving just shortly after coming into SL in May. It is really the one thing I really like doing in SL (oh, and shopping! :-)) I really would think I would have noticed this before. Is it possible this coule be a portion of something else that I normally wear that somehow got "unassociated"? lol, I hope that makes sense :-)

it could just be something you normally don't see because its hidden inside your body or its a HUD attachment that has been placed off-screen

The 'attachment in butt' bug could've caused it essentially... check all of your 'worn' objects, find them, see if any look like it ^_^

Essentially detach things in sequence once ruled out. Start with hair, find the next obvious thing, work it down until you can't see anything but something is still showing as 'worn'

I have had problems where as soon as I try to attach something like a hairdo, it appears on my butt AND it does not say 'worn' in the inventory and is not highlighted like a worn item. I can right click and detach it though.

But if you relog it should fix as well ;)

Since I'm assuming that OP has relogged.. and its no longer in their ass... maybe its still 'worn' ^_^

Retrace your Steps...

Did you try to replicate the problem, seems you have a clear account of what you did and where you went. If this happens again, then inspect the item more closely. I do know of a couple items that can transfer from person to person. Funny one was a splashable water thing, not sure why it followed us out of the water, but if it was on me... I could bump into my friend and transfer it to her. Same as a general follow script, attaches to the closest AV... and if you bump into or walk close enough to someone esle it can transfer. I'm not sure if something like that would teleport with you tho. Good Luck.

Alien probe???

Actually.....someone stated that nothing attaches without your permission......hogwash my friend. I had a very orneray little sh** throw a flip title at me once that hovered over my head until I relogged. I was in an RP sim as an observer.... minding my own biz, just getting pictures of some cool areas..... and this guy decides to chase me down and harass me for being in a RP sim. I explained I wasn't interfering with anyone and was simply getting fotos.....and he just started calling me names...... next thing I know I am wearing a title over my head that says "Observer Bitch" LOL

I didn't accept anything from him......nothing visible or audible even happened on my screen..... the thing just appeared. However....it didn't show up as an attachment and I could not click on it to remove it.......for all intents and purposes.... it didn't exist..... but it was there, plane as day and only way I could get rid of it was to relog. TP'ing home didn't help. I'm guessing what ever it was, was maybe some kind of tracking prim. I know there are funky weapons that can do all kinds of wierd stuff to an avitar.

So......yes..... something can be attached to you without your permission.....it's just that the method of attaching might be more in the style of a griefing tool....not an actual attachment. (I still think Alien Probe tho)

Strangest Attachments.

The strangest attachments in Second Life are called Primneses, and they rarely match. None yet have a light feature, though they will talk to you if you click them.

Ohh wait, this thread is about something else, oops.
