See stats on how our "friend's" rate parcels?

This is an off the cuff thought.

Suppose we could rate parcels, maybe on a scale of 1 to 10, maybe just check a "cool place" box.

Then we could see results from only the people on our friend's list.

That might assist in finding places worth looking at while resisting being gamed.

The problem with something like this, an otherwise decent idea, is the same as the old resident ratings system - LL would have to keep track of every resident that voted for every parcel. It also brings up a bunch of follow-on questions like what to do if the land owner makes any changes - subdivides, joins, terraforms, etc - do you reset the voted stats or carry them over? What about subdivides - do you carry the ratings to both new parcels or just the bigger one? What about joins - do you just keep the higher-rated one or average them or just start over?

If a way could be thought of to bring back ratings, both the resident ones and other ones for builds or whatever, I'd be up for that. *IF* they didn't add lots of complexity and load to the system..

we had voting once before and it got gamed to death. so voting of any kind in SL would be hard to do unless quite a few steps where taken on the software side of the server.

It was gamed a lot less after LL took away the L$ incentive. After that, it was just something that got really heavy in the DB...

I can see rating places maybe, but I hope to never see that idiotic personal rating scheme again. Even if you got paid for it, it was stupid. No thanks.

To decrease the gaming opportunities even further than just being able to see the results from your friend's list, add a checkbox to the friend's list to let you not include people who's lists you don't trust or just don't like.

The goal of this this idea is to give the user a list of places they might like.

We are already able to see people's profile picks - one at a time. A cumulative list of your "friend's" profile picks would have somewhat the same result.

Sindy's probably right about the benefit not being worth the programming expense.

You might want to mention it to the Greenlife (or whoever) people.. I don't see LL ever doing this but it's a decent idea, especially with the friends-only bit, and would be pretty cool if somebody could figure out a way to do it all client-side. Not sure it can be done but if you're friendly with clever people, they might be able to figure it out.

edit: maybe this is the next twitter/plurk/digg thing... I think it'd need some off-world server work but if you could tie that to the viewer, you could do it.

It is something that can be done web-side by someone who knows a lot more about web scripts than I do. Your friends list is available on the SL website when you log in, and profiles, including picks, are also available. So some app could scan all your friend's profiles, and add up the picks, and serve you a sorted list.
