Hi all!!

First post w00t w00t!!!

So, here's a question for y'all.....is it possible to be able to login, and not have any of your contacts realize you're online?

There are times I'd love to be on without anyone knowing.

Can do? Can't do?

Thanks in advance!!

Well if they have your avatar key I guess you can't anyway.

But for most - just uncheck in the friends list, next to every name where it has the 'eye' - first column. That lets people see your online status.

Course, if they IM you and it doesn't say "offline", you're busted. :p

No matter how many methods you try, there's always a way to see if you're online.

Although inconvenient, the only way to be totally hidden is to create an alt and not tell anyone about it.

Just go to your friend's (contacts) list and unmark the little squares.....(the eye)

I do that too sometimes when i don't wat to be disturbed.

Cheers,

Yann.

But as said, when someone has the unique key of your avatar (and those are very easy to get), there is no hiding... no matter which setting in your preferences or friendlist is set.

A lot of people don't know from keys, though or how to use them...

Hopefully if hidden that's a hint to people that you are occupied. :)

Maybe not. But such can change quickly by a visit at a shop or website.

On the other hand, I think people should be fully aware of this, because there is no privacy in SL.

Not really, I guess - apparently. Same can be said of online. Just degrees of protection really.

Kind of like - do you lock your car door? If someone wants to badly enough they can still get in. But it keeps out the majority of idlers.

there are many ways for your friends to see if your online or not..

1) friendlist
2) profile (currently online)
3) groups (you can hide it in your profile, but if your friends are in one or more of the groups your also in, they can still see your status)
4) key (status indicator script)
5) testing, through im
6) visiting your land, as surprise visit
7) going to places you mentioned in your picks and groups, or where you and your friends hangout often (clubs, parks, whatever)

so, all in all, NO YOU CAN'T

indeed, the only real way is creating an alt..

But.. wait.. why all this hassle..
that many aren't contacting you, at the same time, or logged in session.. so, that very few that reach you, could just be ignored.
Or tell them, sorry busy.. :)
it's no biggy..

remember, you don't HAVE to respond to everyone IM'ing you. (same as when someone call you on the phone, you can ignore it, if you know it's just a "wazzzaaa" type of call)

so, why bother hiding...

unless.. ;)

There's been a lot of talk of "having the key." Good online trackers look that up for you in an online database.

Also, I'm not sure where I saw it, but I don't generally go beyond Linden provided information. I did a search for someone a week or two ago, and there was their key, right on their profile or web page or whatever.

Maybe it was something the Lindens added for a while and then took away. Like those fun and useful ban, freeze and eject buttons, RIGHT on the profile page instead of two layers in.

Or maybe I was halucinating again.

Since this seems to be something people want...maybe a request should go to LL to provide a setting which wouldn't HIDE you but would mark your status as "Do Not Disturb" or something similar...you would be visible, but not bothered...IM's would be stored the same way as if you were NOT online...

I'm still pretty much a "noob" but there are times when I'd like to get some work done without a chat or visit....

Um, that's what the "Busy" and "Away" buttons are for, but they are less than satisfactory.

Um, it's not just a matter of buying. You can't control when a group is going to drop something on you, or an individual.

As someone said.... the only privacy there really is an alt.... which is kept on very distance away from the main.

Beyond that.... lost case, just look at the list one of people here published....

Thanks for help everyone. I am an alt, but I was hoping to hide my more well known main from view.

meh, can't matter. I was just hoping for an easy 'tick me to hide and never ever be seen whilst still enjoying SL in all it's glory' option.

Cheers.

Depends on your definition of 'good'. You can save a database call by providing the key (uuid) to the script. Some work off of avatar name, av key, and/or both.

The key is only available when you look someone up via the All search tab. It came about when that was put in. You can also get the uuid of regions that way also.
