Someone told me there was a way to automatically clear your cache everytime you log in, through the advanced menu. Does anyone know how to do that?

I don't know about the debug setting for that but you might try adding " -purge" to the target field of the shortcut you start SL with.

You would be defeating a lot of the purpose of your cache by constantly clearing it. I clear my cache if and only if I have some sort of inventory or graphics issue that a relog does not fix.

To stand around a few extra minutes glaring at your loading inventory and the surrounding clouds that have names above them that you recognize.

Then you can come complain about the Lindens being inept because you are beating tar out of the beleagured asset server.

Ever heard some respond to a report of a problem with "Clear your cache and relog"?

Some folks have problems so frequently they'd prefer to just start with an empty cache every time.

Why not clear it on every log in? I do it most of the times. Takes few extra seconds for SL to launch and, if the grid is busy, a few extra seconds for things to load upon my log on. I don't have cache problems though. Don't lose inventory. Don't log in "ruthed" or naked. But, to each their own.

Doesn't mean you are still not beating tar out of the beleagured asset server. I dunno anyone needs clear cache twice in a row as you are essentially, well, clearing your cache twice in a row and wiping out what you just loaded, so it does not make much sense.

I've also heard people say "reinstall sl" to fix a problem but don't do that every time either.

A corrupted SL client is quite a bit more rare than a corrupted SL cache. The constant writing and over writing on the cache makes for many more opportunities for errors. The client does not get changed until it's updated.........unless there is something major going on (like a OS crash) to corrupt it.

Plus reinstallation of the client almost never fixes anything........quite the opposite with clearing the cache.

I practically never clear my cache and never have these problems either.

Once in a great while, if I crash hard, I might log in and myself and everyone else will stay Ruth'd -- in those case I will clear cache to fix the problem, but otherwise I prefer to let the cache do its job.

I have never cleared my cache in over two and a half years. I see people recommend it and others claim it helps, but I would look for a deeper issue on your machine if this is a recurring problem.

Well, I clear my browser cache often too. I also defrag my hard drive about once every two weeks. There is almost never a "real" reason to do any of that....except a preventative maintenance sort of thing. So it takes a second longer for Google load......but I'm reasonably sure it's a fresh load and not some cached page from last week. And before someone pipes in with defragging a HDD is hard on it..............I know that too. But the life expectancy of those devices is about 5 to 7 years under normal usage...........I figure this computer will be way out of date half that time anyway. :)

I wasn't explaining the behavior of people that don't clear their cache, I was explaining the behavior of people that do.

We should have a "delete settings.xml" function in the interface, and maybe in the folder with the Second Life launch shortcuts. It would be nice to never have to have to come up with "C:\Documents and Setttings\AppData\%username%\SecondLife\usersettings" again.

I did that path from memory, usually I click my "shortcut to SL cache" shortcut so it's right.

The suggestion from Clubside to try to find other causes of problems is a good one.

=====

However, now that I think of it, if SL is misbehaving, and you aren't sure why, starting out with an empty cache would be a way to eliminate an already corrupted cache as a source of trouble while you are diagnosing the problem. The crash problem you are trying to correct might cause the cache to be corrupted, thus giving you multiple problems.

But defragging an HDD is hard on it...oh, sorry. Never mind.

nevermind that that mad seeking on a hard drive is alot harder on it than the occasional defrag too....

some peoples setups seem to have issues with SL's cache, so they require frequent purges... seems like the huge inventory crowd has it the worst, so size is likely a factor

sl cache
11-23-2008 02:14
As i mentioned before, i have to clear cache nearly every re-log, otherwise i wouldn't get into sl at all. At the moment this seems to work for me and now I seldom crash or have graphics related problems. Under the current circumstances I am not prepared to risk not clearing the cache and I don't care how much my pc complains.
