Greetings all. After a cursory search of the forum, I don't find a thread that really addresses my question. I've recently bought a modest plot on a private island sim (Yay!!). Since this is the first SL property that I have owned, I am soliciting your advice/tips/tricks concerning initial setup. Thanks in advance!!

Well first off what does the covenant say? What can you do by way of terraforming? How many prims?

oooo so many questions, so much time now Maintenance Wednesday is here....

Set Auto return to on, no push, no script

If you really want tp limit other then set no build, and no move objects in from adjacent parcels.

But please dont use banlines, they ruin SL for so many simple travellers ;)

Then........

..... build something! I suggest a one room shack as a starter, who needs more? Im trying to start a reaction against the SL standard of MTV Cribs style pimp palaces.

If you want to really live the simple life the SL Parks and Recreation service has a good backpack, tent and campfire freebie.

Just wondering why "no script"? There was a little discussion over in Scripting Tips about the unnatural and slightly laggy workaround that makes it possible for attachments to keep functioning in no-script zones... when they visit, a lot of folks like their AOs to work (which mostly use the workaround already). So, kind of wondering what folks think about which to use when: no script, no object entry, or neither?

Personally, my rationale was to discourage griefers with scripted weapons...if my tail doesn't work correctly in no script areas, I figure their toys won't either.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

It's hard to fire a weapon when noscript is on. :P That's the point, really - confine scripts to group. And typically, AOs will work because they are attachments and are running prior to entering the parcel. I've never had a problem with my AO not working on noscript land unless I take it off on that parcel.

I manage an island, sometimes auto-return objects isn't an option as the island owner may have objects on your land, different if you buy rather than rent I guess, however definitely have Create Objects and Object Entry All Residents un-ticked thats the sure way to stop griefing, if you want other residents to build on your land set it up in a group.

If you don't know what you want to do, maybe you haven't been exploring enough, check out Burning Life, some great ideas there for inspiration, you can also visit my island (below) a mix of newbies and experienced builders giving good ideas what can be done with your time and land in SL.

Free Land, No Tier Fees available soon.

I suggested No script for the reason that others have commented - limits weapon play, doesnt eliminate it i know. Just a suggestion for a new owner along the lines of start watertight and then relax from there...!

Personally, it doesnt bother me too much and I always set a generous auto return time so people can do a bit of tinkering with their own projects.

Don't buy a horse, they eat too many prims.

And the prims they leave are not very useful

Thanks for the responses to my "why no scripts" query. I'm still a little confused, though: if the weapon is attached before entering the parcel and has already taken controls ("Release Controls" button is showing), I'd think that weapon would still fire. But I don't do weapons and don't really see many 'round my neck o' the woods, so maybe SL gunslingers don't usually "pack heat" in advance. (Apologies to the OP: this is surely not the most critical decision to make about new land.)

Thanks for all the responses. In answer to a question posed earlier in the thread, this is a residential sim. I will be putting up a house and it will basically be used as a gathering place for friends (and a place for me to sit on the beach and listen to the surf). And will certainly take that advice about the horse onboard. :)

In a nutshell, I would limit all options to group and turn off edit terrain. At worst, permit scripts to run on the land by all residents, but no object entry and no build will keep your parcel litter free.

Oh, and set a landing point, so people can't tp into your bedroom. :P
