How about building just a single wall of the structure in question and developing an entire story, album, and touring multimedia show around it?
All alone, or in twos, the ones who really love you, march up and down outside the wall.
And when they've given it their all, some stagger and fall, after all it's not easy, banging your heart against some mad bugger's wall.

Larax,
Build what you like, for the joy of it.
You don't have to have an in world store to offer your stuff for sale. Only someone who will let you place a one-prim XStreet "magic box" on their land. You can offer your products for sale on XStreetSL.
You might not get many takers. I think I've sold four or five copies of my little Japanese House. Each new sale is a delightful surprise.
You can do the actual building in a public sandbox. Just remember to take your stuff when you're done.
To learn more about building, be sure to take the self paced tutorials at The Ivory Tower Library of Prims.
To learn more about marketing your wares, see the long thread here about "Advice On Sales"

You've got put a lot of love and dedication into it if you want it to sell and give you a good name.
And you're going to have to promote it - which means getting copies of it out there and rezzed in the world, as well as announcing it here and there.
I still need to do that last step myself. I've built a skybox that I really like, and that everyone who looks at really likes, but I haven't tried to promote it enough...
If you build one you yourself don't care much for, why should anyone else?
SL is not a situation where you can just stand there and have people give you cash. It takes work, dedication, talent, persistence, and luck.

The only way to make houses and sell them is to build with no land is on sandboxes and sell on XStreet.
I have never used sandboxes, but what are the chances of your build being thrown back at you via auto return in the middle of building? I assume you have to find out their auto return times and work around them?
You would struggle to sell houses on XStreet if nowhere for people to check them out inworld first. You could offer to rez a copy in a sandbox for potential customers I suppose. You will also need to invest in a rez box system unless you are only making builds you can rez in one piece, which would mean you can't use anything in them that needs to be phantomed or larger than 30 x 30 x 30.

For houses, XstreetSL is more a place to advertise than to sell. I hardly make any sales through Xstrreet, but when I asked my customers, a good percentage told me that they did TP to my rezzvendor after finding my work on there. rezz systems: I use the Rezz-Faux from Lex Neva. It has proven to be a reliable system for a good price. But you can also consider Builders Buddy, which is a free packaging system that does the job just fine. As suggested: offering people the option to contact you to have a preview, is a good alternative for a rezz vendor. you can always deside to get some land to set up a rzz area if things happen to become succesful. Basicly to start selling and getting your work out there, that 1 prim for a Xstreet Magic Box is all you need. that should not be too hard to arrange with a befriended land owner. i wish you good luck and hope you'll become succesful. Ben. Ps: I give out free store space for a fixed 4 month period for Original Content Creators without a store. The next period, starting Januari the 1st. 16 spots avai.able, 50 prim limit. contact me or my partner for more information. or pick up a notecard at my Rezz Vendor. And no: I do not exclude potential future competitors from this program.

If you think your products are good enough that people would want to spend money on them, then seriously consider renting somewhere to display one. Think about it this way, you will be saying 'I believe in my stuff enough to invest a bit in them'.
If you are not prepared to invest a little in your own products, why would anyone else want to?
You don't necessarily need a lot of money to do this, land is VERY cheap nowadays, and you don't need to rent until you have a few buildings to actually put up. You can get vendors which will let your potential buyers rez one building at a time so they can see them, so you don't have to have all of them rezzed at once.
To be honest though, very few people want to buy houses unless they can see them first. Think about it, would you really want to risk it yourself? Even if there are LOTS of pictures up on XStreet (and I think there should be for a house, hehe) - well, it is still important to be sure that textures line up well, that cameras work well inside and that the scale looks good for your avatar and things like that. You wouldn't buy a house in real life unless you had looked around it, would you?
Believe in your products! Keep building, perhaps try making some little things that you can easily sell on XStreet for now? Furniture perhaps? Then you could save up the money for some land for the buildings?
You must be getting L$s for your textures though, so I do strongly recommend considering renting some land if you can, or even going premium and buying some (sounds more expensive, but you do get stipend and it is safer, so might work out cheaper in many ways) - either way, if you want to sell your prefabs, it is going to make things easier - and as I said before, if you believe in your work, you are probably going to have to make some sort of commitment to it, that is just the way of things.
I wish you the very best of luck, and if you think I could be of help to you in anyway (I have been selling prefabs etc in SL for nearly 5 years now) please don't hesitate to contact me.
