Screen text missing

Hi all.
Anyone know if there's a Debug setting which starts/stops IM text appearing on my screen? I dl'd the latest RC and even though the Text Chat preferences are set normally I'm not getting the text on screen which means unless I keep checking the Communicate Console I miss messages coming in.
Thx for any help.
