Just wondering if any of you lovely people would be able to help me out with this.

Sometimes, whilst walking round my living room, the tree that's outside, suddenly appears to be just inside my living room, and depending on which way I turn, it then goes outside again.

Should I be concerned about this tree and or just 'leaf' it alone?

It seems to find my living room very 'poplar'.....

Do you think it's 'oak'-kay for this tree to keep changing postition?

(okay, sorry about that but I couldn't resist... )

But I am serious about the first few lines of the thread.....

Is the tree next to a transparent window of your home?
If so it may be the transparency glitch cause it really sounds like that.
It just appears to be in your house because of transparency issues.
I suggest you remove the tree away from the transparent windows.
Or re-build your house not using any transparent textures.
Also if the tree is flexible, blowing in wind it maybe going into your house when
the virtual wind blows it towards the house.

Thanks FD....I think that may be the cause.....

I live in a rental so I can't really move the tree, but it doesn't really matter... I was just really curious about it..... Thought the glitch may have been my computer's fault or something like that.

Thanks for the info....

This is the "alpha sorting" or "alpha flicker" (and many other names) you may have heard about. It's apparently a problem with OpenGL, not with SL as such, however, I am not a programmer.

What's happening is that the alpha of your wall section (so it can have the window) is fighting with the alpha of the tree leaves, and sometimes it puts the tree "in front" of the wall, and sometimes behind.

God, there are so many things to learn about....I just found it really interesting.....

Joaking aside, the transparancies from the tree could be just inside your house. As FD said, move it a little firther away if you're pining for a treeless living room.

Sometimes what happens when 2 transparent images are too close is they will appear to be somewhere they aren't.
I know this happens in SL because I am always making textures a lot of them use some type of transparency. I had lot of problems with testing transparent new textures in my lab
when I had lot of transparent windows and transparent viewers in my lab.
Anything even 10 meters away if I had 2 transparent images I have some type of weird distortion.
The weird thing its not always as obvious when I make trees or flowers unless those items are in front of something transparent too.
If it's a rental talk to the person who manages the property about the issue perhaps they can remove or move the tree.

An easy solution is to put something non-alpha between them! :) (Of course, we also have to watch that we don't stand in front of windows whilst wearing prim skirts with transparency... ;) )

I've seen this happen with indoor plants too, where the window appears to be in front of the plants or they do battle for the foreground. Glad you got to the root of the problimb.

Yes, try contacting the person who owns the rental.

(I would crack a bad tree joke here, but I'd be ash-amed to)

I was told by a Linden there is a (programing) solution for this but it would greatly slow down rendering and many video cards don't support it.

Another possibility... The resolution of Linden trees change depending on how close you get to them, foliage on some of them appears to expand as you get closer. I had this problem in my store, I placed some trees outside of a vendor wall while my camera was zoomed out and looking down from above. But when my avatar moved over close to those vendor walls the foliage looked like it was coming thru the walls. I had to move the trees further away.

Hm, do I have to declare this the Bad Foliage Pun Thread?

In my first little house, I really did have a tree inside sometimes-it was moving in the wind and sometimes peeked into my cottage. I quite liked it. Nosy oak.

Oh that's good, couldn't top that one.....

Well, thanks to all of you who have helped me get to the 'root' of the problem. I feel like such a 'sap' for not knowing all this before. :D
