When i start SL i get a plain black window, i've left it on over night to see if it will load but it remains black

Hi Chaos, Not sure what you mean by "usual stuff", but sounds like the installation is messed up. Try uninstalling SL, deleting the folder it was installed in, and manually deleting the SL cache (everything in the C:\Documents and Settings\'user_name'\Application Data\SecondLife\cache folder)... then reinstall SL.
