Why do temp prims allow you to exceed your prim allowance?

The current system of temporary prims causes many people to use temp rezzers to try to exceed their prim allowance so causing lag.

So why do temporary prims work that way?
Why don't they count against your normal prim allowance?

The main legitimate uses of temporary prims seems to be for things like bullets and holographic vendors.
But why not require the land owner to leave some unused prims so people can rezz those bullets on the land?

I don't think this idea will be popular since it means people cannot use "tricks" to exceed their prim count, but it is fairer since the number of prims you have is what you paid for.
If there are multiple land owners on a sim, the resources given to each person will be more closely represented by the amount of land they own.

Who knows - if LL didn't have to leave extra prims for temp rezzing maybe they could give extra real prims to everyone.

Most people don't misuse temp rez. I'm only going to have bees, birds, butterflies etc. I wouldn't want to impinge on the other three sims on the server, and I'd hope that went for them towards me too.

The reason for temp-on-rez is so that visitors to the land could use scripted items or other function that might require rezzing objects, without being unable to do so due to the landowner using up all their prims.

Thanks Yumi :) One more nugget of knowledge!

I'd guess "temporary" prims are for prims that automatically clean themselves up.

The KB seems to support that view:

Temporary objects are automatically deleted after a short time. This is great for any short-term object you don't intend to keep. Examples include bullets from guns, physics experiments, or test scripts that involve motion or might otherwise get away from you.
I don't really see any convincing reason why temp-on-rez objects shouldn't count against the parcel prim limit.

Having them count against parcel limits doesn't really affect anyone except those who use temp-on-rez to go beyond their prim count, everyone else can leave free prims along with a first-rezzed-first-deleted approach when attempting to rez a new temp prim when all the free prims are exhausted.

I think it's more of a convenience thing - if you're playing with guns and such on your land, it'd be a pain to have to plan for the max number of bullets flying around and keep that many 'real' prims free..

That and it may actually be a little easier on the sim as it doesn't have to readjust parcel prim counts (and possibly return stuff) if a temp object happens to stray from its home. It gets to just delete the objects, too, instead of having to send them back to the inventory/asset servers.

It's a landowner/guest thing. If I want a guest to be able to use their magic wand to rez sculptures while they're visiting my club, I don't want to have to give up 255 of the prims I've paid for on the offchance that will happen some day.

The problem is then that any griefer could place a temp-rezzer on your land, or just beyond the edge of your land and firing temp-rezzed prims across the parcel border into your land, and devour your free prim count. I won't go into technical details beyond that, but if temp-rezzed prims count against a parcel, a griefer can remove the available prim count in any parcel, at will. No thanks.

It would be a bugger that for every shot of your freebie shotgun you would have to remove 10 prims worth of furniture.

temps can be rezzed on no-build land?! 0.o

otherwise, what prevents griefers from using up your prim count with regular prims?

btw, if you don't know, from what I've learned, there is a second prim count for temps, somthing like 500 or the result of some formula based on parcel size (whatever is smaller I think), and if there are more than that many temp prims they start to get deleted more agressivelly

btw, I remember there was some value on the about land window that did count temp prims, I think it was the ammount of prims a certain avatar owns, I'm not sure. I dunno if that changed, haven't had any land of my own in a while to be able to verify that
