From wikipedia

"In early 2008, Activeworlds, Inc. plans to release the first customer-oriented feature in years: the introduction of Customizable Avatars, similar to Second Life. The feature has been described as better than the competition's, with more options for easier customization. It will come in the next version of the browser, 4.2. Version 4.2 will be released to the general public (in the form of open beta testing) on April 21, 2008."

This is pretty significant I think.

edit: and according to the forums you can import your own .x mesh for your avatar. WOW

From a 3D Modeling standpoint, that could be really bad.

Nothing sez lag like some noob with a bootleg of 3D Studio MAX creating a 500,000 polygon avatar. ;)

Yep, that's been possible for quite some time now.

In my eyes the underlying technology of Activeworlds has always been 100x more scalable than Second Life. This is because it doesn't use asset servers like SL, so everything is decentralized. and the worlds/sims are absolutely huge!.

The thing that held Activeworlds back was its avatars. The custom avatars on that webpage don't look too great. But neither do SL's default avatars. So I guess we'll just have to wait to see whether the users can improve their avs.

I don't think LL should be worried though.

..and making full-prim torus/SCULPTY avatars is better, how, exactly?

Thanks, but I will take the good with the bad. Sculpties and full-prim avs are cool. However, I will take custom av meshes (AND skeletons) in a heartbeat over them. At least they would look and animate properly for us non-humans.

All the women in the pics have short hair. I'm not going there if I have to have my long locks cut off. Nor am I going there if I have to keep my undies on when I take a quick dip in the river!!

I agree totally and I wonder what limitations there are, if any.

Over the years I have checked out AW but it always seemed like some ancient technology. Actually it had completely fallen off of my radar. To see it being developed today to compete with the likes of SL is really incredible. I will definitely be keeping an eye on their progress.

Yes this has me really excited. Everyone being able to import their own skeleton and mesh is kind of mind blowing. I'd like to see this in SL.

Anyone who has been involved with AW recently would you care to give us an insight into life there? What's the culture, community, economy, art, etc like? Thanks!

Please do not discuss the competition on an official LL forum. This forum is for organizing lawsuits against them only.
