I had a look a while ago at the police blotter, and saw a few who were warned or suspended for "alt abuse". Now what is that exactly?

Having too many alts logged in 24/7 perhaps to camp/fraffic farm? Possibly finally, they they find 100 or so bot alts excessive? Maybe if the 10,000 bots online were culled we might get rid of a lot of performance issues.

Abusing your alt? Some people do this, really.
However, I think it may be using your alts to abuse others in the hope of escaping punishment.

It's in the community standards, near the bottom. "While Residents may choose to play Second Life with more than one account, specifically or consistently using an alternate account to harass other Residents or violate the Community Standards is not acceptable. Alternate accounts are generally treated as separate from a Resident's principal account, but misuse of alternate accounts can and will result in disciplinary action on the principal account. "

I doubt they would consider having 2 or 3 AV's on at once alt abuse, perhaps those running more than that 24/7 might be investigated? Many campers run their full 5 alts at once to make money. And apparnetly from the skin place with the 100 cheating traffic bots in the lake, it is evident some people can run 100 or so simultaneously or at least someone is hiring out 100's of alts as a service.

From: Cally Zabelin I guess that is alt abuse. But still, how do they know it's an alt? They can only act on what they can detect, but they do seem to be pretty good at matching up accounts even if they weren't told it was the same person. It would probably be unwise to let your sister sign up with an email account you also used to register, unless you're certain she can behave herself

They know. The same email address would be a clue. Not sure if they can link alts via your IP address. And even if your sister's account wasn't your alt, if she's banned for harrasing other residents your account would be blocked too.

You are always responsible for what anyone else does on your account, no matter what platform/game/whatever you are subscribed to.
We see this excuse used on eBay a lot, and people are told the same on the forums there - YOU are always responsible for anything that happens with any of your accounts. It is up to you to keep others from using them.

By ip usually work very well, a friend of me who was a forum moderator had as one of his little game the task of hunting and removing alts.

In my forums and this one a record is kept of everyone's log in and IP address. I cull out and block spammers from my forums by watching the IP addresses. I can also run a query against my database and find out who is using the same or similar IP addresses. "G"

Yes. But alt abuse sure is on the grid and not here in these forums right? From: Serenarra Trilling You are always responsible for what anyone else does on your account, no matter what platform/game/whatever you are subscribed to.

It is up to you to keep others from using them. That is logic, obvious and correct, I hope everyone is awere of that. Now back to the point again; Alt abuse. Lucky me I dont have a sister who wants to use my e-mail (rofl) to create an account, and I would never ever allow anyone to create or sign up on anything using my email. But I guess LL looked this person up who got warned/suspended for alt abuse and saw that he had more than one account (avatars), and I also guess they can see which one he/she used most. And i'm talking about the grid, not forums, because that has to be what LL meant with alt abuse. Or am I wrong.

Actually I think I do remember an ALt abuse case on the forums a long time ago when the forums were open to any SL resident.
A Particular av was being abusive in the forums and when suspended simply created a new one to continue thier abuse.

Just as this forum can track your IP, I am sure LL can track the IP address of people logging into SL. I was trying to answer the question: "How can LL tell if accounts are associated?"

From: Cally Zabelin Yes. But alt abuse sure is on the grid and not here in these forums right? I believe that, on the forums, alt abuse is also defined as a banned person logging in and posting using an alt.

I can't abuse my alts?!?
Oh no, I left one chained to the wall in my bedroom. I hope they don't find out. Maybe the bleeding has stopped by now ...

Actually, if it is a recent thing it might be using copious alts to post LM's to your store in thier picks.
