Well, as I have noticed, whenever we reach a new record online number, the new strain causes the system to hiccup. It probably reveals weaknesses which weren't apparent at lower online levels.
Where did you hear the 5,000,000 number anyway?

make sure your caps lock is off and you have the right account name and password i had that a few times when I had remember password checked, but it deleted it every time anyway and I just pressed enter before realising.

From: Kiboe Munro just an assumption, since there is 1,000,000 accounts registered It's always been dodgy at high concurrency. It's got better over time but I think it'd explode with 5 million on.

From: Kiboe Munro is the grid having problems? funny man. well, of course it is. it's a day of the week, and there are always grid issues on a day of the week. you are inputting the wrong name or password. slow down and check your spelling.

Concurrency numbers

@kiboe, No the system is not built to handle millions of people at once. Its built to handle just about the most people that log in at one time, which as of today is a record 61,000.
Each server cpu running a copy of the simulator software has a fixed limit of 40 people, and there are 12,000 or so map regions. So at most, in theory, you could handle 480,000 people if every sim was packed full. In practice, most servers average a few people in them, and something else will reach capacity first.
Thats either the outside network bandwidth talking to all us players, the internal network among the servers (like when you teleport and your character info has to be copied from one server to another), or the back end databases (like the asset database that holds the billions of unique items we players have generated). The last planned grid shutdown was to expand the asset server cluster, so I guess that was the latest item to reach capacity and needed to be enlarged.
No large network, be it the phones, the internet, or electricity, is designed for everyone to use it at once.

From: Kiboe Munro just an assumption, since there is 1,000,000 accounts registered If those 1,000,000 accounts ever logged in simultaneously the implosion would take out our entire galaxy. Most of them are long forgotten anyway. LL just keeps them around cause the number looks pretty.

LL just keeps them around cause the number looks pretty. well sort of there almost 12,000,000 right? over 1.5 million have logged on in the last month so must be at least 1,000,000 that aren't long forgotten? But 10,000,000 that are long forgotten .. ooops. Doesn't the system basically start performing so badly at a given point that theres practical limits on log on amounts? For example if people start crashing and being unable to get in at 60,000 would make it darn hard to get up to 70,000.

Oh well, ever since the last server update thing, it's kind of a gamble (GASP!) to TP for me...every other TP kicks me out of SL....Grumble.
