http://tinyurl.com

When referencing long URLs in posts, making a tiny URL and referencing that instead will prevent the post from scrolling another half screen width or more off screen, and make posts easier to read.

Happy Friday.

Is there a corresponding long url service that takes a short url like abc.com and changes it to something unwieldy like http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=10&url=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FAmerican_Broadcasting_Company&ei=xYi4SJXKDYSI8gTx8_AH&usg=AFQjCNGumx2pcHpIf5m_oIPe_rMiKFOmuA&sig2=miyDJNXOzjg3GaWoNjBwfw ?

Excellent! (I sorta figured there was.)

Now the next time someone complains that the answer I provided to the question of where to find old versions of SL, the answer to which was wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions .
I can just tell them to use

I used to use tinyurl.com too. good service. These days I prefer snipr.com - it's like tinyurl but supports aliases (though I now see tinyurl has these too) and clickthrough stats, ability to edit urls at a later time (very handy) and general eye candy.

There's also elfurl.com , in the event one doesn't like the two already mentioned.

I just tried the one Antony mentioend, it let's you make urls like http://snipr.com/sueblog which look nicer that the tinyurl or elfurl random strings.

This works for me when I highlight and copy the text and paste it into the browser's address bar.

I you click on the link and it fails I suspect it's due to a flaw in Strife's greasemonkey script or some other problem not related to the url or the gianturl service. Many links appearing here fail when you click on them but work by copying the text and pasting into the browser addres bar. There's some kind of problem with the ampersand character, among other possible problems.

When I read this post , for example, only the first line of the gianturl is highlighted, which can't be a good thing.

I testd it before posting it.

I understand that the URLs generated by some/many/all of the URL-packaging services have a shelf-life.
That could mean that people trawling old posts would not be able to access the material being referenced.
It would be fine for passing UR:S only intended to be accessed in the short-term.

I think I remember running into this problem with some shortened urls I made a few years ago.
