OK, so I think I just crashed again. I don't know for sure, because despite all the problems all you people seem to have, I've only really ever crashed once before. In that instance, my client just suddenly shut down and left me on the desktop.

This time, I got a strange notice that I had just been "disconnected from the region you are in", and as I result I was "logged out of Second Life".

When I try to relog, a box pops up and tells me my account won't be available until 17:11:36 Pacific Time. Which is only in about five minutes from now, but still. I'm not upset....but I'm kinda puzzled. Why would my account not be available for 5 minutes?

something to do with the server needing time to log your av off. when you crash unexpectedly obviously you don't log off naturally. why it's five minutes exactly i have no idea. sometimes if you leave it a minute or so you can log back in though ;)

I usually just hit connect again.........most of the time I get on on that second try. Sometimes it takes 3 or 4 tries. In severe issues, it's been the next day........though that was a long, long time ago.........maybe over a year.

It's really only about 30 seconds.

Not always... sometimes it's the full time... depends on the server you were last on and how bad it's loaded down

That's when I go straight to my alt... Everyone knows her anywayz and I'll trust her inworld for the few minutes it takes for me to get my account back. (^_^)

BTW... I have her friended with "Edit my objects" enabled... It really helps when crashing in the middle of a blitz build contest. (^_^)y

gee you guys are lucky, a few times when i'v tryed to log in under 5 minutes it's added another 5 minutes.

just like at school "five minutes of silence everyone" ... "crunch? was that you talking? alright class, because of crunch the 5 minutes will start again"

lucky enough 5 minutes is enough time to go to the fridge, pour myself a beer and make a sandwich :)

When I relog soon after a crash, I usually get the "region has begun logout process message." If I try again right away, I get locked out for 5 minutes. If I wait about 30 seconds then try again, I get in.

I think the deal is that if it thinks you're spamming it with login requests, it shuts you down for 5 minutes, even if it's capable of logging you in right away..

I know when some people crash their av is stuck inworld so I think SL gives a few minutes for that. Has happened to me before.

When I get the "you have been disconnected from Second Life's Servers' my mini-map is usually red cause my internet had a hiccup.

That is actually the prerequisite. When the server realizes you are gone, you can relog, which depends on a number of things you cannot do much about.

I still refuse to believe Dakota has just encountered this after 3 months or she is someone who may actively pursue 1st life.

To answer the OP:

No its not!!!

I expected something far odder when coming to this thread :p

Helpful answer:

The time taken depends on what type of crash you suffered and how responsive the sim and system are at that point. If the sim is stuffed and stopped responding then your login to that region can take a while. The answer is to login to a different region and let the system clean itself up later.

It is true! I simply don't suffer the problems lots of people here do.

Here are the problems I have noted, since I started Second Life:

- I have suddenly crashed-to-desktop once.
- I have been suddenly and mysteriously "disconnected from the region" once.
- In the month of March, for about two straight weeks, 1 out of every 3 TP attempts (sometimes even 1 of every 2) would time-out, forcing a log off. This issue doesn't happen anymore.
- Sometimes (though it's been a while), my calling cards do not tell the truth about which of my friends are or aren't online.
- Some of my boats no longer work (assumed H4 problem). Others work fine.
- Once, something happened to a server or something at an inopportune moment and I was unable to get dressed (!!!). So, I just logged off. For you guys, that's just inconvenient/embarassing; I could get BANNED for having that problem at the wrong time!
- Around once a month, when I try to log, along with the normal log-in messages the "status bar" gives, it says "Downloading Clothes". Apparently it isn't able to do this in time, because when I show up inworld, I'm terribly Ruthed (a message says that I will "look normal to everyone else", but like I'm going to believe that!

That's about it.

Some problems I have seen others complain about but have NOT experienced myself:

- Malfunctioning vendors
- Stolen money
- Missing inventory
- Bad, broken, or crazy lighting
- That creepy scarecrowization that's happened to some folks' avatars
- Repeated crashes
- Missing positional handles while building
- Intercepting other peoples' IMs
- Romantic Drama
- The friends list saying "hippo" (or whatever)

I always ignore the "take five" message and just try again and again 'til it lets me back in. But this may not be the safest policy. Storytime:

How I Gave Up the Ghost

This past weekend I reconnected without waiting, and generated a ghosted instance of myself stuck at a neighboring sim corner near my home. I couldn't see him, though, because as soon as I got within drawing distance of the ghost, he would instantly suck me to his location, from which I could then not walk nor teleport home--although I could sit on llSitTarget'd prims and escape for a while. But if I tried to sneak up on my ghost again, I'd just get sucked back into his evil vortex.

This continued for several hours and was very confusing because the ghost was unobservable to me. Finally I brought in my alt to watch the proceedings, who saw both me and the ghost (who appeared to be behind by several wardrobe changes  ).

After much trial and error I eventually became one with my spirit again when I managed to TP to a distant sim and had my alt TP me back to the same sim where my ghost was hanging out.

I'm sure there's a moral to this story. Something about wearing shades, or shades wearing you, or... I dunno, I've never been good with morals. ;)

Dakota, thank your lucky stars if this is your first time! I get this almost every time I'm in SL for longer than an hour or so -- usually without a nice note telling me so; the world just stops responding. But sometimes disconnected due to mangled data stream.

Peggy, Annabelle: after being disconnected, I often see "region is restarting", and I always immediately try again, and it works, and there was no region restart. But after literally hundreds of tries with the 5 minute message, I've never succeeded in logging in until after the time it states. There's no guarantee that SL is consistent though! It must dislike you guys less than it dislikes me!

Crunch, it's never added another 5 minutes for me. The login time remains consistent. (For me. That's all I can say!)

I haven't often tried relogging to a different sim (I'm usually set on "last place";), and perhaps that makes a difference.

Sindy, I the reason for blocking you for 5 minutes is when you log in but it thinks you were already logged in and didn't notice that you left. I've seen a similar but different case where I *am* logged in and log in again accidentally -- that usually kills the old login and allows the new one. So there's something special about the case when we get hung out to dry -- we're gone, we're not it, but SL isn't quite sure what our state is.

In that case, it blocks you to make sure you completely disappear from the world before it lets you in, to avoid dopplegangers like Qui reports.

BTW, this can happen without any internet hiccup. I often run two clients (two avs) at the same time to test scripts or adjust poses. One can get hosed while the other keeps running just fine. For me, that's the typical case. It matters not whether I'm on wired or wireless, btw.

Good story, Qie! I always wondered what might happen -- but it never lets me cheat. Most likely I just need to login to a different server. However, I usually want to be wherever I was when I got severed. Ack.

Could be but I'm pretty sure that the "region has begun a logout process" message translates to "oh.. you're not logged in? er.. let me start logging you out."

I think the 5-minutes message, since multiple attempts produce the same end time, means that you've sorta been mini-banned for trying to log in too many times, too quickly - it's a throttle rather than an indication that something's wrong on the server. At least for me, waiting 30 seconds or so after the "region has begun a logout process" avoids the 5-minute message, every time.

I often get one without the other (region logout without 5-min block, or vice versa). They may be related, but not in any direct cause-effect way. I always login immediately after getting the region logout message, and it usually lets me in.

I don't remember ever seeing a region logout AFTER a timeout message. So I do think there's some kind of linkage or relationship. However, I suspect a fair amount of random behavior here.

Tip: If it says you cannot log in for 5 minutes or so, it seems to be because SL hasnt realised you have logged out (normally after a crash). If you have another way of contacting someone "in world", get them to send you an IM - the system then realises you are not online and will let you straight back in.

It's something my RL wife and I tent to do a lot when one or the other crashes and works every time :)

I don't crash much at all either..........and haven't since about mid 2007 or so.

And, occassionally I get the "region has begun a log out process" ...........and I do the same as I do with the 5 minute wait message. I guess, I don't get ghosted when I do crash........might be because SL is glad to boot me and makes sure I get a clean kick!!! :)
