...is it just me, or, the more the viewers are upgraded, the more issues arise? I'm loathe to talk about the 'good old times' but as a friend and i did just that yesterday, a lot of things seemed to be taken for granted a few months ago.. ...we could tp to each other...now i seem to crash at least 50% of the time... ..draw distance could be maxed out, flying over sims..we could see everything in this beautiful metaverse...now i'm lucky to be able to move at all in a store with my draw distance set to 96..i have no idea if there is anyone else living in my sim...i can't see Windlight was sooo beautiful then..now i have to switch everything down to minimum just to run the viewer.. ..we could contact each other via IM at the push of the mouse button..now i have to either wait for friends to contact me, if they're lucky to realise i'm online..or search groups to find my friends..go to the website..then come back inworld and search for them...because..my friend list had not been populated for at least 2 weeks!!! ...and don't get me started on those dreaded Silent Crashes..there isn't a day going by without me having at least a few i have voted in JIRA on those issues..i have reported bugs..but i don't have the feeling anyone at Linden Labs cares..things like the above never get a mention in the so called bug fixes (the word upgrade used to be exiting..now it sends shivers down my spine) I love SL..but my, what seemed to be incurable, addiction to it seems to be solving itself

You're right but that's the nature of the beast ...
You might prefer the Nicholaz viewers, I understand that these work better for some people.

Devil's Advocate (naturally): I don't find new versions any more or less unstable. They all seem to possess similar issues, but none that impede enough on work-flow to make me give up or complain about it. I do crash a lot more often than I should...I guess I'm just more accepting of these annoyances.
I guess I don't mind such low performance, because SL isn't an action game...if it were necessary to be quick and accurate, it would be unplayable...but it's not an action game, so I live with it.
I still think there are way too many pros to make me hate the cons.
I'm sorry so many of you are having such a difficult time getting things to work. Other than the low frame rates, and lag in general...the majority of SL is working (both on my home system, and work system).
At home I'm running older hardware: Dualie P3 1ghz, 1gig SDram, Geforce FX 5600, XP Home.
Why do you think so many people have so many different issues? I guess this is a system optimization issue...as well as the open sourcishness of SL in general...each system sees SL as something total unique, and SL, naturally, sees each system as a different monster. I guess that's all obvious though...the nature of the beast.

The only thing that bugs me is when I start getting Region Handshake ... SL is the only thing makes me reboot my router.

http://www.ravaz.net/cd%20art%20covers/N_Z/Winger8990a.jpgoops...how did that get there? In all seriousness....yeah, I 've noticed that the latest viewer has been rather buggy, but it still works fine for me (WL viewer) and I just love the new placement of teh buttons down around the chat area. (I've removed my AO a couple of times now by accident) But don't worry, thats typical for new releases...jut give them a week or two to get the bugs worked out ad a few more patches, and everything will be ready for the next rev release. errrr.....thump

From: Evangeline Biedermann Call me a Whinger...but... You're a whinger ... but ... you are seeing probelms that do exist. Your coments are valid and very real. It comes and goes. Features and optimizations need testing and fixing, but if you don't keep at the development, you loose ground to new thech. It's a constant struggle. When you look at the context of "open source" and the fact that almost everything in world is player made -- especially all the scripting and animation -- I am amazed they ever got this beast to work at all. From: Cherry Czervik SL is the only thing makes me reboot my router. /me sigh, "sad but true." There was a time I would have to reboot my router maybe once a month because the wirleless access would slowly degrade to a crawl. That doesn't seem to be a problem any more.

Hmmm, I always find these kinds of posts odd and interesting. My computer is very, very average, and I rarely experience any of these issues...it makes me wonder why some people seem to get hit harder by the bugs than others. Although, I'm sure using Nicholaz's patches helps to some extent.

From: Evangeline Biedermann Cherry, what is a Nicholaz viewer? It's a third party viewer which you can download and install, with most of the features. I understand there's a Windlight and Voice enabled version but I haven't had chance to verify that. I'm probably not the best source of info on this, anyone else got the URL?

From: Evangeline Biedermann Cherry, what is a Nicholaz viewer? It's a viewer developed by Nicholaz Beresford, who adds patches to the LL viewers. You can read all about it here: nicholaz-beresford.blogspot.com I use it and it's been more stable and less buggy that the LL ones. .

I'm probably not the best source of info on this, anyone else got the URL? It's actually not a full viewer, it's a series of patches to the LL-generated viewer(s). http://nicholaz-beresford.blogspot.com/

From: Evangeline Biedermann ...is it just me, or, the more the viewers are upgraded, the more issues arise? It comes and goes. Frankly, right now I feel the platform is more stable than it was, say, November of 2006. IMO, that was about as low as I've seen it. There were some pretty rough spots last Spring/Summer I seem to recall, too. Mari

From: Colette Meiji k I wont ask what a German whiner is called then. A bratwurst. No, wait. That's a German weiner. I've had a pretty stable experience with SL overall. Micheal was right in that it's not an action game. If it were, I'd want my money back. My problem is that the newer versions just get uglier. The chat window, even at its smallest, is gargantuan, and the IM tabs don't blink. It's like they have taken away functionality and called it progress. Why have graphics at all if the chat window is so monstrous that it covers them up?

They do need to restore the blinkies. The non-blinky is just nonsense. I am missing a lot of IMs that way.

Why have graphics at all if the chat window is so monstrous that it covers them up? I wonder sometimes if the existence of Nick's viewer slows LL's reaction to feedback like this. Most folks who hate the communication window's sizing and organization went to Nicholaz's viewer a while ago. .
