Hi all... Noob question of the day (after searching for hours for this info and having no luck)... Since typically most everything is very slow and time-consuming - and overwhelming - for us noobs that are just starting out... (or it certainly is for me) (1) Is it at all possible to work "offline" tweaking your Avatar --- adjusting the appearance settings, trying on various clothing items, etc.etc. ? (2) Is it at all possible to work "offline" doing things like Inventory-related stuff (organizing, etc.) ? I thought I'd seen this mentioned somewhere with at least one or more utility programs recommended for doing some of this type of stuff offline... but I sure can't find that info... and it may have related to something else for all I know. If it's not at all possible to do either/both of the above "offline"... are there are truly ideal places "in-world" to do this sort of thing (assuming you don't own your own land, etc.) - where just standing around in one spot for a l-o-n-g time doing this type of stuff doesn't seem quite so "weird" and unsociable, etc. ? Many thanks in advance for your help.... - the clueless noob -

Hi Lynne, welcome to the forums! No, it's not possible to do these things offline. So everyone spends a lot of time doing these things inworld! There are some places that have "dressing rooms" for exactly this purpose - NCI (New Citizen's, Inc, a great place if you haven't been) and the forum Hangout in Allana both have them. If you need to have "build" turned on (e.g. you need to open boxes and the like), you may want to go to a sandbox (you can just type "sandbox" into search to find them; you would want one that does not allow scripting and is policed. Again, the one at NCI is good, and has helpers too. I've been to the Ivory Tower of Prims one a couple of times lately and it was very quiet too. I prefer the smaller sandboxes in general, though; fewer griefers. If you are in a sandbox, either stand on a pose stand or rez a box and sit on it; protects from some forms of griefer.) Lesser-known stores can also be good. I used to go to a corner of Hairapy and wait for the lucky chair to flip up my letter, happily using one of their pose stands and opening boxes etc.. When I was new I also used to look on the map for entire sims where there was no-one (no green dots), and go there when I needed to be private. I found a few nice places on both the mainland and islands that had build turned on. Another rather sneaky thing I used to do is look at the Land Sales classified and go to a nice large plot that was for sale - those are good for adjusting appearances, never have build on.

Welcome, Lynne! You may also try The Shelter (Isabel 39, 232, 80). If you wander around, I'm sure you can find a quiet corner to do your thing, and there's always somebody helpful around if you have questions.

Very exciting ideas that could be possible in the not too distant future There's an offline inventory viewer, but it doesn't make changes to your online inventory. http://joeswammi.com/sl/se/

There is also the Second Life Clothing Prewiever (or SLCP), but that does work mostly for designing clothes because it does exactly what the name says - you can preview how clothing textures would look on your avatar before you spend the 10 L$ to upload them. Very useful thingie.

When I first got here, I tried just going to a sandbox, rezzing a freebie house, and trying things in there. This works nicely, unless you get caught in a clean-up sweep and everything gets dumped into your lost & found folder. Sun MicroSystems Sandbox has dressing rooms set up all the time. Just walk through the wall. Of course, everyone else can walk through the wall, too. Noob Island has free furnished condos. You can rez things there, but each condo is available to anyone who comes by, so you don't want to try leaving things. The place can be a bit laggy, but it's a good place to start in SL. You can avoid the worst lag by keeping your mini-map open and watching the green dots. The more dots, the slower you'll be.

Sarah Nerd's new Nerdy Sanchez sim has a huge sandbox. Knowing her, she probably will be pretty generous with waiting to clear it.

Welcome, Lynne. You can also drop by The Forum Cartel Hangout in Allana. There are lots of times that a few of us are sitting in there doing things like organizing inventory and catching up on forum posts, while being semi-social at the same time. We also have a sky platform with a changing area in it.
