I host events in a danceclub (no strippers, but live DJ) The recent thread on tipping danceclub staff led me to wonder:
What exactly do you think a good host/hostess should be doing for you in a club?
It really depends on the type of club and the event but I'll throw some things out there:
1. Come up with an event and try to be creative doing so
2. Promote the event via search and otherwise
3. Search for and purchase wardrobe and/or costume
4. Search for and purchase, or create props/sets if needed
4. Greet every guest who arrives
5. Say goodbye to each guest as they depart
6. Allow the conversation to take a life of its own which is best. If the clientèle creates and breathes life into it that's the best way to go
7. If conversation dies down then the host needs to keep the crowd entertained. Many may be in chat and want to be left alone and that's fine but you can't assume that's true for everyone. Work it without being obnoxious. Read the pulse of the crowd.
8. If there's a popper that brings a little money into the club then you have to work it. Not too much and not too little. Balance.
9. Yes, much as everyone hates them, you have to remind people to tip the staff. People complain that they don't like being reminded, but I assure you that tips go way up suddenly after a reminder is announced.
10. Watch for noobs and give them special attention. Help them with danceballs, explain the popper, etc. At our club we gave out a special newbie folder. They don't tip much in the beginning but they keep coming back.
11. Keep an eye out for griefers. When that guy shows up on his birthday who is moving around really well, it's just good measure to keep an extra eye on him.
I'm sure there's more, but I think that's a pretty exhaustive list to start.
