Please tell me I'm not going mad...
In the past I've made certain items available for sale at a reduced price. These have been promotional items, usually to launch a new product. So what I've done is to make a small limited number of boxed items available where people have bought the original as opposed to a copy or contents. In the past I'm sure that when someone has bought these items that the ownership AND the actual item have been transferred to the new owner. The item went to the persons inventory and was not left in its original place.
Recently I had a new item to launch and decided to do the same again. Only this time I noticed that it didn't work in the same way I thought it had. Now when someone buys the item only ownership is transferred, not the actual item. That is left in its original position for the new owner to "take".
I can't actually remember if I did any tests on this the last time around, so tell me, am I right? Did this ever work in the way that I described or have I just been lucky that the new owner knew to "take" the item?

As far as I know, nothing has changed.. You set an item for sale, selling original, the buyer has to take it into inventory.

It has always been that it stays in world upon transfer. The new owner has to take it manually.
I do not remember a time where this has been different. And I've been around since the beginning.

I have always had to "take" an item that I bought the original on.

It's always been like that as far as I know. You could still use that setup and set your auto return to 1 minute to it goes into their inventory then. Hopefully 1 minute will be short enough that they can't get a "I didn't get my item" IM in to you.

That is left in its original position for the new owner to "take". this is the way i've always seen it work. i used to (re-) sell one-of-a-kind items and this "taking" business was always confusing to avies used to getting copies in their inventory.

Thanks all for putting me right

Looks like I must've dreamt it then Ah well, you live and learn. Shame it doesn't work like I thought after all... would be less confusing to buyers that way.

Just a thought... Would people prefer it if "sell original" worked so that it transferred the item as well as ownership? Might be worth a JIRA if people found this more useful! Just seems a bit silly that it doesn't do this automatically.

Often though, sell original is used for large bespoke builds including sims. That would not be nice to have it all go to the buyers inventory first and have to re position it all themselves.

Shame there isn't a button to check on or off so the seller can chose the best option for their particular product.

Right now, "Sell Original" is the ONLY WAY to transfer ownership of precisely placed in-world content, and LEAVE IT THERE. For example, when a landscaper surround your house with plants, they have to do a "sell original", to allow you to take position of the plants where they positioned them. When a builder does a custom build for you on your land, and has everything terraformed and fitted perfectly in place, they use "Sell Original" to make those prims yours. If "Sell Original" automaticly took the item into inventory, virtually all landscapers and custom builders would be unable to work for clients. We would have to build it, let the person take it, have them place it roughly, and give us edit rights, and then we would have to position it all over again? God no! Or alternately, you would have to sell the builder your parcel, and he would have to sell it back to you "with objects included". Which would mean any builder woking on Mainland parcels would have to be a Premium member with a huge allowance of unused tier? What is desperately needed for builders is some way to manage the sale of multiple prims/linksets on a parcel as a single sale, to a designated buyer. But that is a seperate JIRA issue. The solution for your intended use is simple, and is probably what you inadvertantly did before. Set a 1 minute auto-return on the parcel where the things are sold. Do a "sell Original" on the item. They buy it, and 1 minute later it ends up in their inventory, in the Lost and Found folder.

Shame there isn't a button to check on or off so the seller can chose the best option for their particular product. so long as the default was \not\ to transfer the item to inventory. (due to the issue Ceera just spoke of above, and much more clearly than i could have)
