OK, I've searched for this in the knowledge base and I apologise in advance if this is a very simple question but:

I'm thinking of moving my house from it's current plot to a new plot and was wondering whether there's a way of picking everything up (house and contents), TPing to my new plot and then putting it down there so that everything is still in it's place?

I like my house and everything in it but would like a new location. It's 1024sqm and 234prims.

Thanks

Jimi

Yes, go into edit mode, fly above your house and select it all within the yellow box. Then click "take" and everything will disappear as one coalessed item into your inventory. Make sure you have edit on when you drag that item out of inventory on your new land and everything will reappear as it was when you took it.

But I don't advise doing this until the asset server is fixed.

That simple eh?

I am going to wait until everything gets back to normal, but thanks for that advice anyway!

It helps if you click "Select only my objects" in tools. If you grab someone else's object when selecting, it won't let you take them. Remember to uncheck this later or you won't be able to get info when you click on objects that aren't yours.

I would highly recommend individually picking up any high value no-copy items seperately if you this.. I have done this successfully in the past, but I hedged my bets a little by picking up my bed, piano and a few other odds and ends that I would have hated to lose. It took a few minutes to place those few items but it was well worth the peace of mind that I had less chance of losing them.

And yes wait until the asset server is back to "normal" whatever that is. *laughs*

Jimi will be using your advice to move to the avatar retirement home when that happens.

If your house was built on-site and none of the bits are linked, I'd suggest linking at least the major structure into a single object, or if that isn't possible, into sections. Then you have a belt-and braces backup if you make an error when rebuilding it.

or even simpler

return everything on the land
go to the new location
go into edit mode
rez the stuff in lost&found

as your in edit mode, all the pieces are automaticly selected on rez and no chance to miss something :)

Does that work? Cool.

I thought you got numerous objects in your inventory when you did this.

This could be real confusing if you have other stuff in your Lost & Found folder before doing this. At a minimum, I suggest clearing out the folder before doing the return.

Also, when you say to rez the stuff in that folder, I assume you mean select them all and drag them onto the spot you want. If you rezzed it one at a time, then you wouldn't have all the pieces selected when you're done, just the last one.

Not a good idea. The way they get sent to inventory Lost and Found when you return everything is VERY unpredictable. It may be one coalleced item, or might be several, wih half the house in one inventory item and half in another.

also be sure you have your draw distance high enough to see everything when you select them from above the house

I do the drag around the entire thing and select
then I go down into the house and holding down the shift key, add anything that was missed, into the selection (or if I do not want to select something, hold shift and click on that item to deselect it)

good luck with the move

if you need help, give me a shout, I will help if I can

There is also a gadget you can get - can't remember what it's called - the one used by prefab house builders. It remembers the positions of all the objects placed into it or something. This might be a safer option if the asset servers are still acting up

Can anybody else remember what it is called and provide a less garbled explanation of how it works?

Took this advice in the end and it worked fine. Thank you Raymond!

My new parcel is next to what looks like a fairly established region, where as my old parcel was in a region with lots of land on sale. Didn't want to risk loads of ads popping up around my new home!

Now, need to figure out the best way of selling off my old parcel quickly so I don't have to pay the extra land fees! Hmmm. Any advice guys?

Anything that is copyable/modifyable by the owner can be boxed up with Rez-Foo, Rez-Faux, Builder's Buddy, or similar products, and then can be taken into inventory and re-rezzed from the box at the new site. These tools also make it easier/safer to reposition the build when you get it to the new location. But you have to be able to add a script to each linkset in the item, and have to take a copy of each piece into inventory and then add it to the rez box. (It's a good idea to have each linkset labeled with a clear identifying name, too, and not just 15 parts named "Door".)

Technically, a modifyable but no-copy item can also be moved this way, but you have to take the original and put it into the box, then can re-rez it one time only, since the rezzer can't copy it.

Yeah, search for old notes on the subject and/or start a new one. The people with the best answers on selling parcels aren't necessarily the same people who would read through a thread on moving a house.
