I just received a warning notice in one of the groups that I belong to.
It concerns SLX Terminals. Have no verification whether the warning is based on fact or is just another one of those rumors that get started, but imho, it's better to err on the side of caution.
The warning says to be careful, that someone has been placing Invisi-prims over SLX Treminals and when you use the teminal the money goes to a throwaway alt and not into your account.

I have been reading occurances on the SLX forum, does seem as if someone is going round a lot of the terminals and putting invisible prims over them so when you pay your money is intercepted. People need to check who they are paying

Old (undernaded cheap wussy) trick. Folks with no ethics or moreals will do this not only to SLEx terminals, but to any object that accepts money - vendors too.
Always check to see who you're payin'.

Oh no, not that old trick again. Be sure to use CTL+ALT+T in order to highlight transparent objects. If you see a translucent red object surrounding the terminal that will be your invisiprim. Once you have it highlighted, right-click on it, get the owners' and creators' names, AR them and the invisiprim

It's probably just a silly rumour.
I can't believe SLX would be silly enough to allow people to build on their land.
* Edited *
But then again, if they're giving terminals to store owners to put on their land then they obviously have no control over build permissions.
...
Just ignore me!.
I'm not well..

From: 2k Suisei I can't believe SLX would be silly enough to allow people to build on their land. The terminals are mostly not build on SLX land, but set up in malls and such, so they have not that much control over them.

Nothing new here, the placing of invisible prims over vendors etc has been in game for a long long time. Sad, but none the less true.

As in the Real World
08-21-2007 06:58
From: Tomas Gandini The warning says to be careful, that someone has been placing Invisi-prims over SLX Treminals and when you use the teminal the money goes to a throwaway alt and not into your account. Interestingly, as an aside, this type of thing has occurred many times in Real Life. Someone puts a kind of overlay on a physical ATM machine. It looks just like the real thing with a slot for your card and number buttons. Users have no idea that their card and PIN numbers are being intercepted by someone other than the bank. The thieves don't get any money at the time of the "transaction," but they obtain your personal information which they may use against you in the future (for example, identity theft). Avanti

What I would be interested to know is whether Linden Labs would even attempt to be helpful in tracking down the real life people involved. This kind of trick will go on forever if it can be done with impunity.
At least my superstitious habit of going to SLExchange HQ only to use the terminals has been vindicated.

I now always use the "Withdraw Lindens" button on the SLX website to send Lindens to my AV. It feels much more secure than typing "balance" and "withdraw" into chat!

The lesson: 'Sploders bad, outright theft okay. Why does it seem that rules and rule enforcement in Second Life revolve around punishing honest people and slapping the wrists of dishonest people? I researched putting up an SLX terminal, but the land is not allowed to be set for sale, so I opted not to. However, it would be prudent to turn of build and object entry if you have an SLX terminal on your land, or at least the area around the terminal should be set that way. Unfortunately, SLX doesnt care if you have build on or off, as it would restrict those who would othewise have one. There's another way this sort of theft could be done, but I wont bring it up as people would come down on me for mentioning it, but either way, always be sure to check not only for an inivisible prim, but check who owns the machine.

I always wondered why SLX don't make a personal HUD to make deposits and withdrawals?

i tried to rezz an object A with an invisible object B overlapping it, whatever i do (pay/buy), it will still goto object A. you can only see/pay/buy from object B when Ctrl+Alt+T is enabled. anyone can test it out too?

From: Pratyeka Muromachi I always wondered why SLX don't make a personal HUD to make deposits and withdrawals? Because you can't pay a HUD, and having you perform a "pay" action is the only way a script can find out whether you have enough money to afford a charge or not.

Why does it seem that rules and rule enforcement in Second Life revolve around punishing honest people and slapping the wrists of dishonest people? Great question. Do they even bother to slap wrists.
