:o I'm bored...just got home from a fun evening with the fam and I've had two (yes, just 2) cocktails....but I'm in a mood so here goes....

After watching the movie 'Galictica' which was released as a sort of prequal to the whole Battlestar Galactica series (which I loved and miss!) I got to thinking....... a brief explanation is in order for those who haven't seen it........the movie's common thread involved a TOTALLY immersive cyber world that teens were into heavily.....

It made me wonder.......IF.....(and I believe that ultimately this is indeed what the future has in store for us) SL was a completely immersive experience.......how would it change your behavior/activity?

It gave me pause when I watched the movie because I realized that if I were able to completely immerse into a cyber reality....I would probably be totaly no holds barred in my approach. The idea of having a 100% sensory experience....and yet be totally 'safe' in physical reality.....would just be way too seductive not to simply go all out. I would not care what anyone thought of me......I would likely have no shame or inhibitions.....I think it would likely be both amazingly thrilling.....and dangerously overwhelming.

Thoughts???? :D

Many people already live their SL with that mentality (I mean the "go all out" way of approaching SL and activities herein).

It wouldn't change anything. I pretty much do what I want in SL as it is without any reservations.

I think it is inevitable. If I came out of the immersion at all it would just be to work to support the habit, and to take care of biological necessities -- assuming machines haven't reached Kurzweil's Singularity by then and will take care of our oblivious bodies.

I do not necessarily think this will be a bad thing. Many would become addicted, but many would not get it and want to stay in the mundane world. Many would still be real world achievers. Some will immerse for long binges and then feel compelled to resurface for a dose of reality after the fantasy strays so far the brain can no longer conceive or create.

New art forms will arise, making our present day movies look like the flickering blurry unwatchable black and white attempts of the early 20th century. Music could be made just by thinking at the recording studio. Same with art. The possibilities stagger my mind and this is something I've been dwelling on for some time lately. I WANT this to come about.

[Edit: but you're talking about uninhibited fantasies? Where other people are involved I will always be inhibited I think. More immersion might even amplify that. In the scenario with the total immersion though, I think there could be robotic NPC's indistinguishable from people possessed avatars. That might tempt more of the wild side. ;) ]

Jumping out of a plane while being attached by a rope to the plane's tail sounds like fun. I would be "Dare Devil Extraordinaire."

My first ever SL forums post as Phoenix.....

Became really good friends with Sydney Jacobs, the first to answer that post.

I think the wonder would increase tenfold for me. Not changing much in behaviour, but holy cow, the feeling of making prims move to your every whim? I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

I pretty much please myself as it is although a big part of that is about pleasing someone else. That said, it sometimes shocks me how folk often maintain barriers that make good sense in RL despite the fact they're pretty much redundant in the virtual context.

I'm sure that will come along at some point just like 'puter viruses. Some asshat will think it's fun to introduce them just because they can.

I try to keep Jackie on the straight and narrow out of respect for the "persona", but the alt is another story completely and has no shame or inhibitions, as you aptly describe...and it is amazingly thrilling and dangerously overwhelming.
