TL; DR: starting with the 1.22 release, only the currrent, immediate previous, and RC versions of the viewer will be supported by LL. So, when 1.22 comes out, 1.20.x will no longer be supported and you'll get that upgrade red flag at the login screen (ETA; since this is a newish thing, they will delay forcing that for 30 days).

None of that matters if you use one of the unofficial viewers. Those bypass the whole automatic upgrade thing anyway, and even if up to date LL doesn't support them.

Okay - time to back up my WindLight settings They seem to disappear when I install a new viewer, or have in the past anyway.

Will you be able to use the channel parameter in a shortcut to allow you to continue to use unsupported LL viewers?

The channel trick will pretty much make it an unofficial viewer in the login server's eyes, so sure.

I'm pretty sure that the caps server 500 response change is part of what prompted this (1.20.17 and under will need patching), so abadoned versions that don't get fixed are going to have trouble at some point.

And with that the last viewer supporting my Logitech G15 LCD keyboard will go down the drain, after LL in all their wisdom decided that new viewers are not only about fixing errors and introducing new features but also about taking away well working and useful features. Making $100+ investments by their customers worthless.

How does a new version of SL viewer break your keyboard?

Simple: this keyboard as a built in lcd screen that can show for example important statistics for SL: FPS, time dilation and things like that. Very useful especially for estate owners and managers, they don't need to keep the statistics window open all the time. In the pre 1.21 viewers that worked fine, there even was a special sub menu in the viewer preferences for it - but LL in their neverending wisdom took this out.

The channel parameter will get you in but an older viewer won't work for many things, like Teleports. As Viktoria mentioned, if this is due to the caps server 500 response, then the server side work is going to render the older viewers somewhat incompatible.

A patch has been released so people can compile it into an older viewer using the open source software. That will make the older viewer compatible again so it will keep working just fine.

That was posted to sldev today. May 8 is the last day you can be sure the old 500 response will be there, that's when the support clock runs out for it. They won't necessarily upgrade the web servers the next day, but it can happen at any time after that.

Users of the official 1.20 will get the forced upgrade prompt beginning on April 9.
