I saw this one today at WalMart how about this one for SL?

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12347232

It reads at the bottom. The HP Pavilion P6213w-b PC does not come with wireless capability.
Does that mean if were to install the wireless software and use the wireless adapter I won't be able to pick up the signal on our other pc?

I do believe it means it doesn't have the hardware in it already.

I recommend:

1) You get a PC from a computer store if you want a warranty or guarantee you can actually use.
2) Better to find someone that likes IT to build you a PC.

... and I would say that is too high a price for what it is.

The Intel GMA3100 graphics adapter is pretty bad. It's really unsuitable for SL.

They still sell Pentium-based systems

Okay, taking a look at the specs for that system, and I agree - it's overpriced. It is also NOT recommended for running SL, as the onboard Intel GMA 3100 integrated graphics chip will simply not be able to cope. My recommendation is to keep looking.

Personally, i would avoid any kind of Wal-Mart special like it was the plague. Concentrate your search on places that at least specialize in computers/electronics.

Or, if you are feeling creative, build your own. It really isnt that hard, especially if you have someone around you who knows what they are doing.

Some things to remember...

You want...

1. A good, fast CPU
2. As much ram as you can afford (providing you're using a 64bit OS).
3. The best video card you can afford.

Any suggestions for low to mid priced towers?

Search results from Newegg looking for 1)Nvidia graphics 9800+ or 250+ 2)4-6 GB RAM and 3)Intel Core 2 or i5/i7 or AMD Phemon II CPU.

hm..... definitely all out of the price range, thank you for the recommendations (maybe someday? ;))

This one looks doable in the budget, (open box) but is she seaworthy (secondlife worthy?)

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor 7750
4GB DDR2-800 SDRAM
640GB 7,200RPM Hard Drive
LightScribe SuperMulti DVD Burner
15-in-1 Memory Card Reader
NVIDIA GeForce 9100
10/100 Network
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit)

Graphics card comparison chart.

Note that Nvidia chips, the first digit is the chip *generation* (when it was made), and the second digit is how powerful, so 9100 is pretty new, but bottom end of that generation. It ranks pretty low on the chart. My guess is it will run SL on the low settings.

9100 is an integrated card. It is low end and will probably perform poorly as it does for any current videogame

What is your price range? You can get a pretty hefty desktop for $500. If you don't need a monitor or printer you can really get some deals.

She'll float. She won't be any speed demon with that graphics card, but she'll get you where you need to go.

True, but if the system is nicely-priced it might be cheaper to buy it and switch out that card (and probably the power supply, too), than to hold out for a system that has a 5-or-above card.

At least the card in that one isn't integrated into the motherboard.

That's what I had an eye to do. Already have a new PSU

Here's a desktop for $530:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227181

with a GeForce 9500 GT with 1GB video, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit, that might do ok.

Or, there's one with a GT 220 1GB for $550

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229131

I don't see Groovy's price range mentioned.

The OP's Walmart link sells for 700 dollars.

For $700 , Newegg has

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227182

which sounds pretty good to me: "iBUYPOWER Gamer Power 508D3 Athlon II X4 620(2.6GHz) 4GB DDR3 500GB NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit "

The Walmart deal includes a monitor, these one's I've posted don't.

Unfortunately as I look at higher priced ones in the list there they start adding on things other than better video cards and more memory.

/me wags his tail and drools at the $700 machine specs, then looks at the $550 as a good potential and thanks you for the great finds!

"Best" Buy salespeople are a crap-shoot. I've run into a few good ones (several are active contributors on Notebookreview.com), but far more are underpaid and have no interest in keeping up with technology.
