hi is it possible to retrieve im messages from a week ago?

1) If you don't log in for a week, then you receive the IM's and notices from groups, in your email (if selected you want to receive mails when offline in de control panel website).
Then when you login again, you'll receive them also inworld.

2) But if you're asking to fetch old IM's before you have done 1. then the answer is NO.

So, be sure to enable point 1, so you always have a backup in your email.

Although, if you receive a certain amount of IM's notices, object offers and the likes, during absence, then you're going to be capped, till the next login. (capped mains, no more IM's and such are going through). I don't know the exact threshold for the amount of messages before the cap is set in place, though.

former messages are not retrievable anymore.

make sure you have the settings setup correctly, so in the future you will receive the IM's through email.

Besides, a note: don't get too offended by some loony bashing on you. Especially if they are a one time encounter. Words don't hurt, i always say, (from strangers that is).

Don't you have your Preferences set to retain chat and IM as text files?

OK, there are several issues here.

First: Being "insulted" is not a reportable offense. Forget it, or mute the rude person, and move on. However, if you still are intent on filing an Abuse Report, you can do so. Just note the date and time the incident occurred. Linden Lab keeps logs of everything everyone says...they can look it up for themselves.

Second: You can elect to have IMs sent to your email, in Edit/Preferences/Communication
You'll get emails of IMs that people send you while you are off line.

Third: You can record both open chat and IMs to a log on your own hard drive. Again, this is set in Edit/Preferences/Communication. Open chat is saved in a big text file called chat.txt. IMs are saved in text files associated with the avatar name of the other person. All the files are kept in a folder called "chatlog", in a location that yiou can specify.
