I can't just fly around and explore anymore like I used to. I spent half the day looking at various 512's to buy. I'm addicted to renting/buying, dreaming of building, etc. It feels more like a chore right now.. Mainland or private, premium or basic, residential or commercial, I can't get what I want! Just a nice quiet place to build a shop, control the media and landing point, post events on the website, throw a party, take some pictures, chillax..

there just seems to be a mess of in world land search, forums classifieds, etc.. that doesn't make it easy or fun to find a home for myself! and its funny, in RL I feel more relaxed being a nomad gypsy, yet in SL I feel compelled to own something!

It is a good time to buy a 512. So go for it.

mainland though? I'm debating upgrading my account, paying the 7.50/month and getting 1200L/mo back in stipend. then the first 512m is still free, right?

just all the estates i found only want residential.. plus the owner could be gone or change the covenants anytime. thats what happened last time I was in a nice place until they doubled the tier. I kinda like the idea of buying into some mainland now

I much prefer going premium and owning land. Yes there are many 512 cheap on mainland just now.

You buy the lot, but the tier is free with a premium membership. If you pay premium on a yearly instead of monthly basis it's cheaper.

I would recommend my own landlord, Dirk Talamasca of Blackhat. I've lived on the same parcel for just over two years now and amongst many other positive qualities, I have to say he runs a very slim sim at pretty reasonable rates and you get what the covenant says you're getting.

Unfortunately Blackhat are private estates so you can't do the freebie 512 thing with your premium account. Nevertheless, I've kind of forgotten what lag means when I stick to home turf so I consider my tier well worth the expense. I never took up my option on a free 512 although I have often looked into it because, outside of a few bare naked corners of protected land, I find the mainland to be a plug ugly Hell of laggy nonsense.

On the negative side, Dirk was that dick at the Zindra opening, of which fact I was only recently appraised by the dick himself. Then again I'm not exactly renowned for my tact in the humour stakes so I can't exactly throw stones. Matter of fact, I'm kind of proud of him. The whole Adult continent is a puerile exercise anyway I try to look at it.

I'd recommend buying your 512 lot. As long as they are regular rectangle, flat and nice and green, one is very much like another. You can't control what might be built next to you but if you buy a roadside 512 you can be sure that one boundary will be protected. A lot of roadside land is beside unbuilt future highways, it's worth exploring these.

I'd begin with land sales, in the search tab. But, I'd also go to some sims or spots you like and click the Map and look for yellow spots, yes. Then just click there to teleport to it.

Oh - there is also 'auctions.' :)

Auction page, here at the Second Life site.

Monopoly...
08-08-2009 08:57
Sometime back, I ran into a group of avatars who in their other life were competitive Monopoly players. They were having a blast in SL as if it were Monoploy.

The would start with US$25 each, and then start buying, selling, building, and renting. At the end of 30 days, the one with the most stuff wins!!

I suppose they have more complex rules now.

I've explained that aspect of SL as virtual Monopoly to some (who are totally unfamiliar with virtual worlds) before.

I never really liked Monopoly that much, because nothing really *happens* when you 'get the hotels' and all. Someone says "you win" but it's a pile of paper money.

Here, you can decorate the land, and all the rest that comes with virtual management. I'm not sure I'd want to do it to that extent but I do like the idea of finding land and making something out of it.

Further to what I said about roadside land. Often land advertised in search as 'roadside' is just near a road and not actually bordering one. So always check that when it says roadside it really is!
