Security Concern

I was reading a report in ireport.com about stalkers in SL and it mentioned that a number of residents had the experience of an SL stalker turning up at their RL front door. Is it not impossible for a fellow resident to trace you to RL if you do not volunteer information to them? Am I to conclude that SL is not secure and that all residents run the risk of this happening to them ? Is it possible to hack into a residents account and trace them from there?
I would love to be reassured by someone more technically competent than me.

I have not heard of anyone in SL being stalked in RL unless someone gave them RL info. I often wonder if reporters like to makeup things to knock things that are working ie Face book .
I have been stalked in RL from someone in MSN many yrs ago but that was a case of me wanting to help someone and they became possessive. I gave them info i think if you dont give any to anyone or only to ppl you trust with your life then you are safe.

SL is just as secure as any other site on the internet. Yes, don't just hand out personal information to anybody, but it is no less secure than say Chat Rooms or MySpace. There is allegedly a way where if you are listening to someone's media stream that they are hosting, they can find your IP address. But that will usually only give a general location. In the end, someone can find you if they really want to, the only way to prevent that is not go online at all. You are your own best defense. just be careful what you say, and to whom.

A handgun is just to provide cover fire while you go for your long guns.

The dangers of cyberstalking are very real and an online annoyance can turn in to a real world danger. Guard your personal information carefully, while the person you decide to share with may be a nice person and mean you no harm you can not be sure that that information will not spread beyond them.

Yes, I prefer to deal with pests before they get into handgun range.

You could always join the organisation - you get get a free tshirt.

Pep (On the back it says "Hello, my name is . . . . . and you are out to get me!";)

PS No one attends the meetings, because the organiser won't tell anyone where they are held.

In my opinion, SL is considerably safer than a lot of online sites. There's no direct way for anyone to see any of your personal information. So, if stalkers concern you--Don't give it. I typically limit my "location" info to a time zone.

There has been, to my knowledge, one murder, and one attempted abduction directly related to SL. When compared to other online social venues, that doesn't concern me too much. Keep a healthy divide between RL and SL and you won't have stalkerish problems.

Handguns are illegal in Britain. Purple paint mixed with dogpoo is quite effective, though.

Nobody even knows who all my alts are, let alone any RL information about me. Don't give out RL information and it won't be known. Nothing to worry about. (^_^)y

It's interesting what people are prepared to assume about you based on your IP address.

I have advocated being able to use paint ball guns on the interstates here.

For the law-abiding maybe, but I bet criminals have no problems getting them.
