Is giving out someone's personal info against TOS

I've ran into a situation lately where someone claims to be able to identify my IP address, where my house is, etc. They have since given this info to someone else who is now harassing me. Is this against the SL TOS? I've tried to find it myself but I think I'm either not reading it correctly or not finding it.

If it is against the TOS how should it be reported? In world?

Your IP can easily be detected by many folks using a variety of software and usually will give no more than a vague area of where you live.

That being said, giving out any specifics -- RL name, address, etc is a violation of TOS and you can AR them for that. In addition, if someone is truly harrassing you in RL - file a police report.

Yes, AR them and provide some snippets of chat where they make the claim(s). Disclosure is the offense. Don't wait too long; do it ASAP.

Of course, if it happened outside of SL, I don't know if LL will act or not, but if it happens in SL, AR it immediately.

Sounds like if many people are using it then SL won't do much about it.

If someone is now harassing you in RL this has become a case for the police, IMO.

A router would prevent this correct?

Prevent what - Someone getting your IP? No. There are a variety of ways I can get your IP, but it still means nothing. If you got mine, all it would tell you is that it is coming from the great Denver metro area -- that is a lot of houses.

I thought a router masked your IP, mine has this MAC option (Media Access Control addresses).

Unfortunately, these signs can be fooled when IP addresses are leased back and forth between ISP's. I'm on Verizon in Oregon, but these images say I'm using Roger's Cable in Toronto.. still though...

Harassment is against the TOS so it doesn't matter what they are saying... they could keep their harassment about topics entirely iin-world and that's still reportable.

Yes, but if the harassment is happening outside SL, then LL has no jurisdiction over it. It's a matter for RL law enforcement.

Always remember, while your IP is quite easily found that in itself does not identify where or who you are (except a vague geographic location), however that IP, like any other could be a target for hacking, so the usual precautions apply. Make sure you have a firewall and it’s enabled, install anti-virus (AVG is good and free), if you use a router turn off PING and disable remote management.

Do you DJ? Do you run your stream from home? That's a surefire way to broadcast your IP address. I do it all the time. (^_^)

Funny thing, these dynamic IP addresses... Mine hasn't changed in months. (=_=)

Meh. (^_^)y

if your on cable, you have to unplug your modem *and* remove the cable vision cable from it for a minute to force a new IP, and even then because of limited ip's your ISP has you have a chance of getting the same one.

Different ISPs use different lease times (including never expiring at all). As such, you may go from having your IP rarely change, if ever, to having it change several times a day.

Mine changes daily, on average. Sometimes it even changes right in the middle of an online session for no good reason. >.>

Actually, it's convenient. I don't have to keep changing my stream URL. (^_^)y
