I have been looking forever.
I remember it worked once. Basically if someone sends me an IM a sound used to ping.
Now it doesnt and its driving me crazy. Can you help please if you know the answer?

It only does it for the first one you recieve from someone, and maybe only if the communication window is closed. If you aren't getting any at all, maybe there's something in preferences that you have to select.

I just tested this on the current release as well as a 1.19.1 client, and it just ain't there. This isn't a client setting issue, the bell is gone.

Or it's not

I've tested it from both the IM/Call button on the contact list as well as the Instant Message button on the profile, and I now hear it on both. Latency in downloading the sound + timeout = no hear?

In preferences, Audio & Video, make sure that the UI slider isn't turned down, and that the little speaker icon to the right of that one isn't disabled (disabled is only shown with a small slashed circle, and they leave the slider enabled, so it's easy to miss). There is a mirror of these sliders next to the main volume slider down in the toolbar, the arrow next to the main volume control.

Next, under Advanced->Debug Settings (Ctrl-Alt-D to get the Advanced menu), find UISndNewIncomingIMSession and press Reset to Default (the value should be 67cc2844-00f3-2b3c-b991-6418d01e1bb7 - maybe paste that in if somehow it isn't being filled in automatically).

This isn't the problem. It was my first thought. After going back and forth between me and my alt, the sound finally started playing. Without touching any of that.

Just to clear up some confusion, are you and Mariam the same person?

From the bottom of my heart thank you to everyone who responded.
Its working now, It only comes on when I close the window. I guess this is how it always was.
I also moved the slider up.
Thanks, this was driving me nuts for months.
