When i log out of windlight or release candidate, my preferences are set back to default as if i have jsut installed...

everytime i log in on these 2 viewers, it says it is clearing cache, even though i havent told it to and i have to redo my settings all over again...
the main viewer works properly, but for some reason these 2 viewers wont save the preferences..

its only happened with the latest update of windlight, all the otehr versionswere fine..
its only the first time i have used the RC viewer so i am not sure ab9out that....

ive uninstalled all my viewers completely, reinstalled in different directories, done virus checks, defrags, scanned for errors on my system.. everything.. but it hasnt helped.. i am on my 7th fresh download of windlight now so i know it wasnt a corrupt download...

has thisd ever happened to anyone else?
if it has, how did u solve it?

does ANYONE know how to solve this problem? pleeeeeeeeeeease
/me is begging for a solution

Does the viewer shut down normally? It's probably unlikely it crashes every time, right? I find I have to log out normally to save the settings, or risk losing them when it crashes.

Windlight is saving my settings as normal, except the open/closed state of the mini map.

Are you starting SL by going to the folder where you installed SL and double-clicking on the .exe file? Or through a shortcut (in the Start / All Programs menu, or on your desktop)? If you're doing the first, that'll be why it's not saving your settings, use the shortcut it created during install instead (and don't make a shortcut yourself, it'll fail the same way without the proper flags).

Right-click on the shortcut (either in the Start menu or on your desktop) you're using to start SL and make sure "Target" doesn't have anything tagged at the end that shouldn't be there, or isn't missing something that it needs.

It should look like:
From: someone
x:\path-to-SL\SecondLifeWindLight.exe -settings settings_windlight.xml -channel "Second Life WindLight" -set SystemLanguage en-us
The "x:\path-to-SL\" bit will vary depending on where you installed SL, but the rest should be the same (except for the language possibly).

(The text in "Target" will be much longer than the space you can see so probably the easiest way to check would be to Ctrl-C as soon as you open properties and then Ctrl-V elsewhere. Or if you can't figure it out, just copy - Ctrl-C - and paste - Ctrl-V - in a post here :))

Thanks Kitty :) (Notes made for posterity and help type purposes).

I don't have that happening, but it crashes like crazy atm.

Could you check the target of the shortcut anyway to see if it has the -settings flag, and nothing else weird added to it for some reason?

If that all checks out, open Explorer (the regular file browsing kind) and in the address bar, type the following (including the % prefix and suffix) and then press enter:
%appdata%

(You should end up in "C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data";)

Click the "Second Life" folder there, then the "user_settings" one (if either is missing, that's a problem in itself). Delete any .xml file that's there (most likely named crash_settings.xml and several settings_something.xml files - if the settings_*.xml ones aren't there, that's something to note as well) which will clear all your settings for all viewers you use.

Keep the explorer window open in that folder and start the Windlight viewer and don't log on but use Edit / Preferences to make a change (doesn't really matter which one, just change one/a few setting(s) that you can remember later on) and close the viewer.

In the explorer window with the "user_settings" folder open, you should see a new settings_windlight.xml file.

Start the Windlight viewer once more (don't log on again) and just go to Edit / Preferences and check if the setting that you changed just a minute before persisted.

---

If the settings_windlight.xml file is there, but the settings you changed earlier still aren't showing up, open the xml file (it'll actually open up in IE - or possible FireFox depending on which browser you use I guess).

If there's a problem with the syntax of the file it should just show you an error and indicate which line is improperly formatted.

It's the "Skip all 'Skip next time' dialogs" in Edit / Preferences / Popups that's corrupting the settings_windlight.xml formatting (or more specifically the "Warn about lack of payment info";).

If you use the "Skip all..." button, make sure you enable the "Warn about lack of payment info" warning again before you close the viewer, or just stay clear of using "Skip all..." for now.

You have "Enable OpenGL VBO" turned on which isn't playing nice with your video card?
