OK, I am not too upset about this because it didn't involve any huge financial loss, just more annoyed at the nerve of this guy and his dishonesty!
I had a parcel for sale and a neighbour IMed me, saying he wanted to buy it because it was next to his home. He said he was 5K short and was there any chance I could lower the price of the land so he could buy it. So I lowered the price for him. My main motivation in doing this was to help a neighbour who wanted to expand his home, having been in the position myself of running out of prims and needing to buy more land in the same sim.
I drop by the next day and find that this guy has set the land for sale for the same price I had originally set it for sale for. Not only that, rather than return all the objects I had used to landscape the land attractively, he had left them there - including my For Sale sign! Needless to say, I took all my stuff back leaving him with a bare plot of land.
Makes me wonder how many times this guy has done this before - I am pretty neighbourly in the sims where I own land but I definitely will NOT be doing any favours like that again! Anyone else experienced anything like this?

Not experianced this per se, but yeah, wherever human beings exist, those that will take advantage of them do as well.
Thankfully, people like this are a very small percentage of RL and SL. It's just that crap stinks, so people notice the bad more than the good.
It's also possible that he went above his teir and did a "DOH!! I can't afford this!". Though it would ahve been nice to offer you the land back, or tell you about it. Maybe even offer to split the profit after the initial sale. *shrugs* I would ask him first. It may all just be an innocent misunderstanding.

That was my thought too Jess....perhaps he goofed.... but it still kind of smells bad. In a free market, buying & selling is always controlled by those with the $$$ to buy in the first place.....so what he did isn't necessarily wrong, but it IS pretty slimy. I've got land next to me that a guy came and bought at a ridiculously low price (cause the sim owner set it low in order to fill up his area) and now has it set for sale for 3 times what he paid. It's sitting there empty....and it irks me because if I'd known he was going to pull that stunt...I would have bought it from the previous owner and made use of it. But hey...I guess if he's willing to sit on it and pay the tier, then it's his problem. (he keeps IM'ing me, asking if I know if the tier will be reduced...I feel like telling him to go screw himself lol but I am always too nice)

When I was buying land, I would sometimes IM the seller and ask what their best price was (you make your money when you buy land and a below market price, not when you sell). However I would never lie about it like that and then reset it at the exact price you originally had it listed for. It was a slimy thing to do.

Anyone else experienced anything like this? There IS such a Thing as being Too nice. I think you've just dicovered the threshold of it. I would NEVER consider Lowering the price of something for anyone other than a friend. If i Put a price on something That is the price i expect to get. If you can't afford it, i have no vested interest in Selling to you when someone else will be quite willing to meet my price. I'm a very nice person, but Business is Business. Angel.

At least one thing is for sure.... he won't be 5k short on the next purchase.... Damn opportunist... Wouldn't be the first time I've had said to me... 'Would you do this a lot cheaper for me, I'm strapped for cash right now, as I'm saving to buy yet another sim'.... I DON'T DO CREDIT lol...

I have my land buying and selling moments where I did trade things of equal value or even lost money on land to get rid of it or help someone out. Luckily its all turned out the most I lost was some money sometimes whole lot of money enough where I don't want to go through this again. Maybe guy really is new and clueless, I don't know but it really sounds like the guy didn;t have time to deal with the objects or has no clue how. P.S. OOps sorry I misread I didn't see the part where he resold the land for the price you were selling. I just missed that part. I am sorry that happen. There are people who wouldn't do that I wouldn't. I was really greatful in the last place someone I had talked to who own land was willing to trade land in previous first land area I owned and some cash. But either way its big risk whenever dealing with strangers doing this. I wouldn't do it again.

Maybe he thinks it might be rude to ask you for his money back?

i have IM'd sellers trying to get a deal. it sometimes works. too bad you were taken advantage of, if that is the case at all. i get the opposite. my neighbor keeps contacting me to buy land that he's selling for other people, at outrageous prices. this weekend did it tho.... he just tried to sell me his adjacent 4096 for L$70,000... that's wut he says he paid for it and at least wanted his money back except my friend almost bought the exact same land in April, which was going for L$50,000 at the time, so now i have PROOF he's a scammer and a liar). i kindly explained that prices aren't at L$18+ per meter, and made an offer of $28,000 (L$6.8m) - comparable to the current market. a very insulting reply, but him trying to scam me does not sit well with me. i'd have gone up to L$8m, but not for him. LOL i have taken him from my friends list. every time i log on he's all over me to buy some crazy land with goofy shapes and fingers, or 16m-64m hidden under builds in the middle of it. grrrrr i wish him luck. well, not really. LOL

I have sold land at below my cost to neighbors in my sim just because I didn't need it and they did... but fortunately they didn't turn around and resell. That would have pissed me off, so I can understand your feelings. Maybe you should ask him for a cut of the profit he makes from selling the land? Obviously, he probably won't give you anything, but it might make him feel guilty if he has any conscience.
