just to get to the top of the list in popular places.
95 avatars logged on with a low resource client out of a total of 100 maximum that can possibly be in the sim.
all sandwiched together.
4000 meters in the sky.
Quark/222/139/4004
for someone from 2006, he should be a bit ashamed, but hey, its his private sim, he can do what he wants, but seriously, what a total waste.
just imagine how many email addresses must have been created, how much time was spent creating each avatar.
nevermind the computer resources and fast internet that you must have to run 95 of these, lol.

I count 92, but at least one is obviously bald or has not rezzed in hair so 93...

and people wonder why I ignore things like 'popular' places, or traffic counts when I search something... pft

they don't actually max a sim out..i worked at a big club and back before traffic bots were really popular we were kind of amazed at all the new numbers..we had jumped from 60k moving to the 100's real fast..
the strange is that each time i enter the sim i always checked the map to see how many are there..
i was seeing numbers like 104 and 109..i was like...hmmm how can this be..something is up..then a few days later someone sent me a pic of a room full of what looked like campers in a box..then i saw the names and they were all the same but with number sequence.once people that worked in the club found out it was fake and not because of something we were working for a lot got upset..so they pulled out the room..i talked with the owner and he said he wanted to see if this idea brought to him would really work..but after a few days he started to feel the same as us that found out and had them pulled..

a few months later we started seeing a lot of bot rooms turn up everywhere..
i've never been a fan of bots or camping for the top of the pop list..
or anything that gave false numbers..i always felt that if you take on the job of generating traffic as managers like myself did..you can judge how well you are doing much better with true numbers..

sure a certain number of bots would be there..but was it the bots or the people that worked there that really made it grow?

Camping already showed that dead bodies can get you to the pop list or the top of it..bots were cheaper and the pop list became useless on judging a clubs success as soon as camping came a long.atleast campers became members most times.bots just kind of never said hi to ya lol

I like bot #1.
I like bot #2.
Bot #3 thinks she's all that.
I love bot #9.
I really hate bot #47.
The rest? eh.

Since LL will never fix it, I sure wish a savvy entrepreneur (are you listening xStreet?) would develop an alternative to traffic ratings to find a good store/club/service provider. I'd be all over that. That's why I ONLY shop for SL merchandise on the web. You get more accurate ratings (Yes, you can probably game those, too) and the search is actually organized and easier to shop.

Last summer I got snookered by SL Search into TPing to a high traffic store and was astounded by how bad the merchandise was. Why were so many people shopping here? Then I found the bot coop way high in the sky and I haven't used in-world Search again for merchandise.

All traffic numbers are real numbers, it would be hard to portray them using imaginary numbers. they may be and are exaggerated from time to time though.

I think sales would be a good way, at least for places that are so oriented, say, sales per avatar conglomerated with number of unique avatars sold to... has good possibilities for bot prevention too =X

in fact, unique avatars seems a good way to do most of it, since it makes setting up and running bots a pita.... at least untill some wit automates the whole thing and raises the number of registered av's by an order of magnitude.... which LL will just use for bragging rights... oops was that out loud?

Sales can be played/scripted too, I guess. If I remember correctly, there was some kind of traffic think tank with some people of these forums. Does it still exist? What were their findings?

I guess you could set up a bot to buy an item, over and ovver until it ran out of L$ then transfer the money back to it so it could do it again, rinse and repeat.

I had 128 in my region before.(Back in 2006) and no bots or campers. Only because some had home set there and some re loged after a crash. Still maxed out @ 100 from anyone getting in from search . Only way to get in is by reloging or having home set. No new users will be stopping it @ 100
We Created one of SL's Most popular branded club on SL at the time. And done without Bots or campers. Was at the top of the popular list for a long time untill the bot/camper infestation took over.

i probably remember your club hehehehe..i won't mention the one i was with because we were not about that either..the bot trial only lasted like two days..
we were at the top of the pop list ourselves for quite a while but soon all the camping clubs came in.. even though our traffic numbers were good enough we did not want to lose it to others using camping so we ended up with camping ourselves instead of dropping because of someone with lessor actual numbers stealing it from us..
trust me we all hated camping and i think when we tried out the bots it was close to 9 months after we grew ired of camping and had gotten rid of the chairs and left it up to the numbers..
we lost the pop list but really by that time it was like not even worth it if you were looked at as having all fake numbers anyways..lol
it's a lose lose situation..the club is doing great now and always packed so thats really all that matters..not the numbers..

To compete and make your business visible to the lay-resident who knows nothing about bots, you have to use bots. Even if it is only enough to get you into the lower rankings on the first page search results.

LL sucks for allowing gross bot abuse to the tune of 100,000+ traffic.

It would not be a tax on their resources to have 1 or 2 Lindens do bot hunts/confirmations and kill accounts that are shoved together like that.

This is freaking 2003 all over again but with bots instead of prims and in the end LL is going to do something extreme in their eventual move for a fix. And once again I am posting that it is a problem while becoming a part of the problem just so that I can at a bare minimum, be seen in the results on the first page.

Thanks again LL - this time i have no idea to give you that you will use to fix it. :(

Sure they are, and bots are real customers too.............................

I think LL should promote their own bot viewer and push them on RL companies wanting to enter SL :)

Now if you really want traffic you will need only 30 bots, but jam them tight in amounst a bunch of 200 noob sculpties at ground level with a heap of green round prims in the sky at 700m for the map to show, (if it ever gets updated) and just wait for the traffic from the forums :)

As I've said before , I'd rather see no traffic/ranking system at all, and let 3rd parties come up with something, once any decent amount of other virtual worlds link to SL, any LL traffic system will be worth squat and that one reason why many people are against opening the SL market place to other virtual worlds.

The problem is that, under the current system, no third party can compete with the visibility of the standard Search. OnRez tried, but even they didn't manage to. And since visibility is going to be necessary to sell space (which would be needed for a third party to stay in business) it's kind of a problem to lack it.

*peers at the image* You know what that reminds me of? Those oven bake roll trays that multiply around the holidays. Just need the 'tray' that they come in and the image would be complete.

Really, what annoys me is that they could at least put the bots to use as mobile scenery. Want a tree that sways and doesn't count as prims toward the sim allotment? Dress a bot up as one and have an animation to do the job. That prim rock isn't a prim rock. It's a bot in rock roll.... That wall is also a bot!

Traffic really needs to be redone. Not exactly sure how, because almost anything I can think of as a measure can be gamed.
