Log ins, crashing on tp
09-03-2008 04:25
 I have been having lots of problems for awhile. I have trouble logging in and get the handshake all the time, knowing if I get in after handshake, I wont have music or groups!!!

Once in game with everything in tact, I may get lucky and get to teleport one time but forget a second tp, I crash out constantly. Then can't get back in for a very long time!!

I dont know where to complain anymore since I dont think anyone listens or really cares about my instability problems since I am no computer whiz.

All I want is some stability in the game, log in without problems, have everything in tact and be able to move about world without crashing. Why can't we get that????

I don't like to complain and don't do often, but it is getting really old, not being able to get in and enjoy what I am paying for!!!!! Not a much as island owners so I guess not important enough to be heard!!!!

FWIW, this array of symptoms all seem to point to a network problem. Could be the ISP itself, or any of the hardware (modems, routers, etc.) between their wall jack up to and including the client machine and its firewall configuration. If all that has been rebooted and the problem persists, I'd suspect the ISP (perhaps throttling bandwidth specific to the SL destination or application).

Right, well, one has to think of "load" in a very special way to make any of that sensible. What's often going on is the database queues are backing up for whatever reason (hardware failure, bad query, or--rarely--just too many residents in-world creating too much demand). Because the (diminished) processing capacity isn't able to keep up with demand, the "load" is (sorta, kinda) higher than normal.

(But, tbh, I think they're just recycling the most convenient available error message. :p )

Qie, your answer seems to make sense, but to people like myself who are completely computer ignorant, exactly what does your suggestion mean?? I understand about rebooting, the router, etc...but, how to go about throttling bandwidth?? :)

Oh, sorry, I meant that the ISP could throttle (or "cap";) bandwidth specifically to SL--which would be a bad thing: it could make things really slow, or even cause packets to time-out during network-heavy operations (like TPing).

It's all speculation, but SL would be pretty easy for an ISP to throttle because there's just a few ranges of IP addresses they'd have to treat; that's in contrast to peer-to-peer protocols such as gnutella and BitTorrent for which the addresses could be anywhere, so packet-content analysis must be used for "shaping" that kind of traffic.

Anyway, if the ISP were to do SL-specific throttling, one would be pretty much screwed as far as that ISP is concerned.

But your question reminds me that one can, in fact, adjust the bandwidth sliders in Edit / Preferences / Network, which can sometimes help, when the connection is less than ideal.

I think "Load" applies to the whole situation......
